Hi, I am almost two and a half years post op and began at 311 and am now about 145. I do 1-2 protein suppliments per day whi*****ludes my protein first, then veggies, then starch, if I have room. I am getting in my minimum amount of water at least per day. Everything has been going great...I have had spirts when my appetite would increase for a few days and then it would subside, I equated it with that time of the month, even though I have a partial Hysto. I still have my ovalries. So there is the backround and here is my issue. The last week, I have been experiencing intense hunger, When I eat, I don't feel full even after I have eaten my maximum allowed serving, which for me, I make it about 1 cup or slightly over but not much more than that. That has worked for me all this time. Also even as I am eating, I am experiencing hunger pains and my stomach is constantly growling. I take about 30 mins. to eat and wait at least an hour before drinking after. I have been trying to drink extra fluids and If I do a snack, I do cottage cheese for the high protein content. but i'm at a loss. I am very careful about carbs. I wouldn't say more than about 40 before but trying for less now, and I would have coffee but cutting back on that as well. as for the coffee, I have had it ever since I was about a year out. Since I have had surgery in another state and am so far out and the area that I am in, all I am able to see is my Gastroenterologist, which since that is my only choice, I guess I will have to take it. Please share your insights and/ or thoughts-suggestions with me in the mean time please. Thank you.

Meka, It could be hormones. Did you know that when you have a partial hyst, even though they leave your ovaries, the blood supply to them is cut in half and they start to shrivel up? I would say, have your hormones tested and see what is going on. You can do it through the Internet at www.zrtlab.com. Also a good reference is a book called 'Hormone Hell to Hormone Well" that you can get through Amazon.com. The best doctor I have found for support is my Ob/Gyn. He seems to understand WLS and if he doesn't, he researches it and he listens to my research. Find a compounding pharmacist in your area and ask him what doctors are prescribing them then check them out. Usually a pharmacist will know things like which doctors support weight loss surgery and who is open minded about new things. Hope this helps! Diona

Even though you've had the RNY, you still have the remainder of your stomach.  It sounds as if the nerves of your stomach have reconnected and you are now getting the hunger signals which had been short'circuited by the surgery.  Your poor stomach thinks your throat has been cut.  And it has!! I have no suggestions for taming the "rumbly in your tumbly", except to ignore them.  I know if I eat any white foods at all, or even most complex carbs such as whole-grain bread, I get the urge to eat more and more.  Fortunately, salads don't do that to me. I'm sorry you're having to deal with this.  Good luck--

I hope not, but to be honest, it does feel as if the "old stomach" is what is causing this, I really hope not... Lord knows. Thanx

Hi Meka, you are not alone, it's been awhile since I've posted on here, but the last week I have been experiencing the same exact thing, incredible hunger and increased portions.  I ate my supper last night and ate more than normal, it really did freak me out.   I have not had a partial hysto, but I did switch birth control pills just this past month, and I don't know if it's a hormone thing.... but I have to re-evaluate my meals/portions and times.   I have increase my liquids as of yesterday and so far, that has kept my hunger at bay, last night I had an episode of intense hunger, but drank some water with lemon and splenda, and it seemed to subside... I hope that you can find a solution also!! Good Luck, ~Shannon

Meka and Shannon, let me join the train, I too am 2 yrs 1/2 yrs out and have an insatiable hunger. I can attribute mine to carbs, which i am addicted to. I started at 326 and made it to 143 but now am 150. ughhhh. I too notice the hunger comes and goes. I am trying all protein to get me under control, but really have no answer, other than the hunger does come back...with a vengence. We now have to use the lifestyle changes we should have been making to help us maintain. Like the e word...exercise, which i now like. We can do it, it just takes a LOT of work now.  Peace, Melinda

For now, try eating something more dense than the protein supplements and cottage cheese.  They are not dense proteins and sometimes our tummies like to feel more full.  That may help you get through these tough times.  Good luck and God bless.
