Anyone ever had a muscle cramp in your stomach?

I know this may sound weird but here goes.  I am almost 3 years out from surgery and doing very well no problems since surgery.  BUT last night I had eaten some watermelon and about 15 minutes after i finished it I got what felt like a cramp that you would get in your calf muscle in my stomach area.  It went all the way around to my back.  It felt like someone had a wide band around me squeezing me I could hardly breath.  I paced the floor while my husband prayed and after about 5 minutes (which seemed like hours) it all went away and I was fine.  Any ideas or experince with this. Thanks, Rita

Hi Rita: I am not sure that your cramp had anything to do with food.  I have had "charlie horse" type cramps in my stomach area twice in the past 3 months with one of the times being when I was sound asleep.  It woke me up and I had to sit on the side of the bed with my head between my legs with sweat beading up on my face.  It only lasts about 5 to 8 minutes then goes away.  It almost feels like I have a kink in my pouch or upper intestine area.  In other words, something got twisted.  I will be interest to see what other replys you receive to see if anyone else knows what this could be.  I hope that was the only one you have.  I definitely feel your pain. I have!! During the middle of a pilates class. Also several time at home just leaning back after sitting down. I thought it was a muscle spasm felt like a contraction & charlie horse!!!! Strange feeling!! ! I went to doctor after the worst episode and he said I had a hernia. He said he could feel it popping out. I went to the surgeon and he said I had a hernia. My CT scan came back....no hernia.......so off to my WLSurgeon and he said I tore a muscel from all my ab work!!! So NO AB WORKOUTS 8 weeks later I had it happen again!!!  Meanwhile I started to run and messed up my foot and am having reconstructive surgery on my foot Friday!!! I am sooooooo confused!! I hope to find a reason for your spasm!! Take care!!

Rita, I get charlie horse type cramps in my stomach also, with no rhyme or reason.  I am going to my WLS next week and I'm going to ask him about it again.  I went to him last year and they did all kinds of tests but didn't find a reason for them ....  Well I'm still getting them and I'm going to ask him about them again.   Please let me know if you find out anything!  Thanks!

I have them sometimes too - charlie horse type spasms.  They are so painful!  The only thing that helps me is to lay on the floor on my stomach.   As someone else asked - tell us if you find out anything! Take care, Laina Lap RNY 9/9/03

OK, I can see it after watermelon, almost a straight shot of sugar. Might cause the intesxtine to spasm.

I've had these since 2003, almost always within 1 hr of going to bed. I use Levsin (rx anti-spasmodic) to cut them from about 15 minutes to 4, and of course, no one can dx them. Because I have such trouble breathing, I'm thinking they are diaphragm spasms.

My question to you others is does it follow pain meds, for example, Vicodin or percoset? Has anyone looked up the Sphincter of Oddi phenomenon? Sometimes taking the pain med with a spoonful of peanut butter can prevent that type of spasm. Sinced I've spent the summer with Vicodin as my main food source (LOL), I started taking it with a dab oif PB and that helped the spasms I could definitely hook to the Vicodin, just not the others.

P.S.  My year + long absence has NOTHING to do with my WLS, or my type of WLS. See my profile.

You brought up a good point...  My pain is usually in the diaphram area and I'm a singer, sometimes I get them after I've been singing a while, but then again sometimes there seems to be no reason for the cramp/spasm.  I don't take any pain meds so I can' t comment on that.  Does the Sphincter of Oddi have to do with meds?  I can figure out how to stop mine when I get them, other than laying on my back and stretching with my arms up - that's the only thing that helps me and that only works sometimes.   Hopefully he'll have some answers.

Hi Rita, My surgeon said that mine was most likely an intestinal spasm.  Man does it hurt.  I sweat and feel like I'm having a gall bladder attack (mine is out so that isn't it).  I just have to wait it out.  It usually last just a few minutes though.

I have them as well.  I read in the book "The Real Skinny on WLS" that they are now called scrapmps in the Grand Rapids, Michigan area by the docs over there.  If I remember correctly they thought it might have something to do with Calcium.  I'll try and dig back in the book and see what the authors had to say.

Hi Rita,  I get them on either side on my belly button area. They hurt!!! It take about five minutes and then the spasm is gone, but residule feeling is still there. Lately, I have been getting feelings of constipation too. I hope it's not a twisted bowel.  Hoave you had any new information? Pleae keep me up to date.  Hugs!
