This is NOT medical advice, just my own targets for the main blood levels I watch.

 Protein:  7's

 albumin: 4's

 pre-albumin: 20-30's

 iron: 80-100

 ferritin: 200-300

 hgb: 12+

 hct: 36+

  vit A: 60- 80

 vit D: 60-80

 calcium: 9-0-9.4

 PTH:  30-40

 B1: mid-  to top- range

 B6: mid-  to top- range

 mag: mid-range

 zinc: mid-range

 B12: 1000 +

 folate: 10-20

  AST (sgot): below 40

 ALT (sgpt): below 40

We usually want to "meet or beat" pre-op levels.  In some cases, higher is better, and in other cases (cholesterol, PTH for example), lower is better.

The only things *I* don't mind being on the high end of out of range are ferritin and B12.  But that applies to ME.

My doctors don't show interest in any of these until I am out of range. *I* am interested when I begin heading that direction.

In case you're curious, the reason we don't use that 579.3 code is that some insurances (ours) will not cover anything to do with WLS. There are plenty of legitimate codes one can use and only 1-2 are needed. So, if there's any question about your insurance, use any one of the others that is valid. In my case, I was anemic pre-op, and now show a non-nutritional anemia, as well as some other oddities, so they are all legit codes to use.

There's no cheating at all. Using valid codes is perfectly moral and legal.

What type/brand of iron do you take/recommend?  I had my labs done last month and my iron was 5.0 - no wonder I am tired and have migraines all the time.  Looking at the numbers from above my level seems quite scarry.  She put me on a prescription of 1 tablet a day.  I was taking it 3 times per week average.  I am wondering if I should take 2 a day for awhile until it gets up there. I friend of mne told me her neice had to have a transfusion because her level was 5.0 - my Dr. didn't stress how serious my levels are.  Makes me wonder.  (Just went to my MD so, she's not a bariactric Dr).  Thanks for any advise. Teri

I take Tender Iron, 12 per day with vit C. So for me, 300mg. I prefer to just swallow them, but you can chew or melt in your mouth.

My serum iron is about 83, ferritin about 183.

Thanks for asking this, Kathy. My WLS doc has retired and I have to find someone to follow me. So I was wondering what labs I should ask for. I think I'll use this list along with the other tests I've had done to help guide my GP to order what I need. Thanks again, Vickie PS I'm looking into getting an anchor tummy tuck. Are you happy with yours?

My surgeon tests CMP (comprehensive metabolic panel), CBC, Iron, Ferritin, TIBC, B-12, Folate, and Thiamine every 3 months.  If there is any reason to suspect protein malnutrition then pre-albumin should be checked.  Other labs are determined by whatever other medical conditions you may have.
