Hi, my name is Trudi and I am a food aholic!  I am struggling with this every day as I have noticed many of us do!  I found the twelve steps to be helpful so I copied them for you all... modified for us... 1-  Admit we are powerless over our addiction and compulsive behavior and that our lives have become unmanagable. (I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my sinful nature.  For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out.  Romans 7:18) I repeat this everyday because I am powerless over this addiction! 2- Come to believe that a power greater than myself can restore me to sanity.  (For it is God who works in you to will and to act according to his good purpose. Phillipians 2:13)  I have to believe that God can help me where I have such a lack of willpower over this! 3- Make a decision to turn my will and my life over to the care of GOD.  ( Therefore, I urge your brothers, in view of Gods mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrafices, holy and pleasing to God- this is your spiritual act of worship.  Romans 12:1) 4- Make a searching and fearless moral inventory of myself.  ( Let us examine our ways and test them, and let us return to the Lord. Lamentations 3:40)  Wow, this one was a hard one to do and wasnt very pleasant either! 5- Admit to God, to myself and to other human beings the exact nature of our wrongs.  (Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. James 5:16) 6- Be entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character.  (Humble yourselves before the Lord, and HE will lift you up. (James 4:10)  BOY am I READY!!! 7- Humbly ask HIM to remove my shortcomings.  (If we confess our sins, HE is faithful and just and with forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrightousness. 1 John 1:19) 8- Make a list of all people I have harmed and become willing to make amends to them all. (Do unto others as you would have them do to you. Luke 6:31) 9- Make direct amends to such people wherever possible.  Except when to do so would inure them or others.  (Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift at the altar, and go and be reconsiled to your brother, then come and offer your gift.  Matthew 5:23-24)

I hope this might help others in the same boat as me.  I have never gone through anything as rough as admitting that I have no control.  What a fight each day is.  Hopefully this will get easier in time.  I sure do understand alcoholics and drug addicts more and have a huge amount of empathy for them and us. Hugs, Trudi

Dear Trudi:  I have the same surgery you had last October.  I really felt like it was the first day of my life ...a new bd!!!  However the one thing I was sure of was that my 23 years in OA would not come to an end just bc of the surgery.  I still go to meetings and I am working my 4th step right now.  I am so very powerless over food which is why I needed surgery or else I really thought i would die.  Although I have lost 104 lbs and I am not physically binging the mental wheels at times keep going, and that is why I am grateful to sitting in a meeting room and just listening and or talking about this eating disorders.  Great to hear and read your message.  Sylvia

You are very wise.  I will make a copy of your notes to keep and reflect on daily.  You know, I thought everything would be solved after surgery also.  I have lost 100 lbs. and am at a wonderful weight after a year and 3 months.  I am so very thankful, but frightened at the same time.  I see old habits creeping right back, how can that happen?!!!  I can't eat huge amounts at one time, PTL, but boy can I graze!  I remember only one year ago having to make myself eat.  Your post will help me to remember my reliance on the One who made me!  Thank you!

oops- here are the other three steps... it was late last night... 10- Continue to take personal inventory and when we are wrong promptly admit it. (So if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you dont fall. Corinthians 10:12 11- Seek through prayer and meditation to improve my concious contact with God, praying only for knowlege of HIS will for me and the power to carry that out.  (Let the work of Christ dwell in you richly. Collossians 10:12) 12- Having had a spiritual awakening as a result of these steps, I will try to carry this message to others and practice these principals in all my affairs. (Brothers, if someone is caught in a sin you who are spiritual should restore him gently.  Bu****ch yourself, or you may also be tempted. Galatians 6:1)

Hi, Trudi.  Since you're already using a faith-based program, I thought you may be interested in checking out http://www.wdworkshop.com/home.asp, which is another faith-based weight loss program.  I just read about this yesterday online, so I'm not using this program, but wanted to share the information. Good luck on your continuing journey! Kellie

Thank you Trudi,  I will keep a copy of these steps in my personal files to read over and meditate on when needed. God is good and with out my faith, I would be lost. God bless! Cath
