Does anyone have any suggestions for eating hummus other than on crackers?  I'm trying to avoid the carbs and am stuck for ideas. PS.. the different flavored hummus ('s - lol) are good, ie Trader Joe's, and besides, it's good for us..lotsa protein! Thanks

Love it on cucumbers, veggies, mini lettuce wrap, roll it up in turkey.   I also make my own Tahini and use it the same way or as a dip. I buy the Tahini paste and then mix it with  olive oil, lemon juice, salt and garlic, and thinned with water. Then I add a little spicy red pepper flakes to some olive oil and put a few dots of that on top to make it pretty and add a kick. Serve it up on a flat plate for dipping. Another sauce idea and to kick up the protein you can always add in some of the unflavored 100% whey to it or maybe try adding in some cottage cheese into the blender and see what happens.

Tzatziki Sauce

INGREDIENTS

  • 2 (8 ounce) containers lowfat yogurt
  • 2 cucumbers - peeled, seeded and diced
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1/2 lemon, juiced
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh dill
  • 3 cloves garlic, peeled

DIRECTIONS

  1. In a food processor or blender, combine yogurt, cucumber, olive oil, lemon juice, salt, pepper, dill and garlic. Process until well-combined. Transfer to a separate dish, cover and refrigerate for at least one hour for best flavor.

My favorite way to eat hummus is with toasted whole wheat pita chips. I just buy whole wheat pita pockets, rip them open and put the halves (actually 4 quarters) in the toaster oven about 325 degrees for around 6 minutes.  I break them up and put them in zip lock baggies. I make sure to have the same amount in each baggie so I know exactly what I'm taking in nutrition-wise. As an aside, my favorite brand of hummus is Sabra. Tribe of Two Shieks is ....eh....okay, but I'll drive 30 minutes to the ONLY store in the area that carries Sabra!

Me too.. Sabra is the best!!  I love the garlic one where they have the garlic in the middle.  Also like the olive one.

So far so good!  Have a nice little support group going and taking it one day at a time. Tracking everything, getting in fluids, protein is way up, lbs starting to come off again.  Had a few slips this weekend but dusted myself off and got back up again.  No problemo!  Thanks for asking =)

I like to eat hummus with slice red or yellow sweet bell peppers.  You get that nice crunch and I don't miss the crackers.

Hey Tina!  I absolutely LOVE hummus ... but it surprisingly has a lot less protein than one would think (just like cream cheese).  BUT, any veggie would do ... my fave is sliced red pepper or cucumber.  I also "wrap" just about everying in a lettuce leaf.   I've tried many different flavors from Costco ... good stuff.
