Something is frying my liver???
Hi Everyone,
Thanks for all the good wishes, it really helped as I thought I was having a heart attack....
Thursday around 6:00 PM I laid down on the bed after a very long day cleaning up after our basement flooded. I lost a lot of sentimental items and it was an emotional day to say the least.
I felt a pressure on my chest and thought I just pulled a muscle. Well it started to go down my arm and then my legs felt funny and I couldn't breath.. I don't remember much after that but just remember thinking so this is what it's like to have a heart attack. So much for working out and being healthy
My DH called the ambulance and they took me to the ER. To make a long story short they couldn't find anything wrong with my heart. As a matter of fact when I did my stress test they couldn't get my heart rate up enough to test as I was in such great shape. So working out does help. My heart was rockin...so what the he$$ was the matter.
Well my blood work came back and your liver enzymes are suppose to be 5-45 and mine was over 800. Something was frying my liver. I don't smoke, drink or eat bad foods. I don't take tylenol or any other drugs that would damage the liver.
Some think it may be the pre-natal vitamins I take. They were clueless at the hospital. I am thinking it may be the large amount of artificial sweetners I eat. And I take in a lot!!!
Have any of you had issues with your liver years after your surgery? I will be 3 years next month. Any thoughts, suggestions and or ideas is most welcome. I need to get this mystery solved ASAP...
Thanks for any help you can give me!!
Take care,
Kathy

My liver and spleen are enlarged but my liver enzymes are normal. They were elevated prior to surgery because of the 'statins I was on for my cholesterol, but so far have been normal. We're all sort of flummoxed as to why my liver and spleen are large, and my hematologist/oncologist is working me through a bunch of tests (including eventually a liver biopsy) to rule out lymphoma.
I assume they tested you for hepatitis? That's one thing that can cause skyrocketing liver enzymes. And what I wonder about sometimes is the effect on our liver from managing all the toxins released into our bloodstream when our fat cells are deflated, since they store toxins and hormones and such.
I wish I had more information for you. Let me know what your WLS doc says. Mine's stumped as well, and hasn't seen liver problems with his patients nor has he seen it in the literature.
Take care,
Vickie
Hey, Kathy!
I posted to you on the main board. I have elevated enzymes for a year now but other medical issues have taken precedence. This needs to be addressed one of these days. Need to see my doc. Mine have been over 300 at one time... strangely enough when I was hospitalized a year ago for chest pains. They ended up being esophageal spasms due to swallowing vitamin tablets whole. Figured it out by accident about 3 weeks later. Yup, had chest pains daily for a month before I figured it out. Joyful. Anyway, while in the hospital my levels dropped overnight down to 100 or so. They have gone down but haven't been normal since.
I've had ultrasounds for it and CT scans for other reasons and there is nothing abnormal to see so I'm not freaked about it but I am concerned. Need to go back to my doctor to check on that now that surgeries are hopefully over (anesthesia can affect levels). Also need to get follow up on an ovarian cyst seen on CT scan. It's always something. Argh!
Take care, hon! Let me know what you find out.
Hugs, K

I had surgery April 2006, had some post op complications, but once that cleared have been well. I went for follow up labs in October with a primary care physician as I moved and my surgeon retired anyhow..my liver enzymes were high! After many appointments and referral to a GI specialist, I had a liver biopsy. The bad news was I had an autoimmune disease called primary billiary cirrhosis....my bile ducts were affected by an autoimmune process. I don't know if the surgery triggered this but have never suffered from any autoimmune diseases. I am on a medicine now to help my bile ducts drain and this is an incurable situation...well, I can have a liver transplant when my liver completely fails..but I am in stage 1 at this point and might be 80 years old when it fails.
I have to say I was shocked as I had no symptoms. But follow through and see a liver specialist and make sure of what is going on with your liver.
Good luck,
Paula
