I have a friend who has serious Sleep Apnea and has been considering having WL surgery, however, she believes that she must get the Sleep Apnea under control first. How has the WL surgery affected your Sleep Apnea? Have you found it has gone away? I told her Sleep Apnea is a plus to having the surgery because it is an important co-morbitity. Thanks for your replies... I had severe sleep apnea and used a CPAP before my wls and continued using the CPAP and was tested occasionally so I knew when it was safe to do without the machine.  I believe I was about 9 months out and down 100 pounds when my oximeter testing came back NO MORE SLEEP APNEA!!  Woo Hoo!! If someone is tested and shows sleep apnea, they do need to begin using the CPAP - if that is prescribed - and have the air flow regulated, wearing the proper mask comfortably and use the prescribed course of treatment before wls - at least in my area - but without losing the weight you won't be able to get rid of the sleep apnea.  That part comes after the wls.

No it is considered a co- morbitity. I had it very bad and since I had surgery i had hoped it would disappear but it hasnt completely gone away.. It is much much better though.... I am happy for that.

I had sleep apnea preop. I HATED that darn machine, but I had a girlfriend in Michigan who almost DIED during wls because of undiagnosed sleep apnea (her surgeon now requires ALL patients to have a sleep study done).  Mine went away completely and I was thrilled to be able to give away my machine to someone who desperately needed it but couldn't afford to purchase one.  I've talked to a lot of people who say that losing weight either fixed it all together or greatly reduced the sevarity of their sleep apnea. It is a comorbidity for insurance purposes as well.  HUGS

My sleep apnea has almost totally subsided since my surgery. I did use the apnea as one of my comorbidities when trying to get insurance approval. -BJ

My sleep apnea was brought on by my weight gain [eta I was on a CPAP before surgery] and totally resolved by about 3 months post op.

Permanent weight loss requires permanent change.
