Hi, I've been trying to design a hypoglycemic diet that still supports my wls needs.  Unfortunately I've regained about 10 lbs doing this.  Does anyone have a diet or info that could help me here.  I need to lose weigth not gain it and yet this hypoglycemia is making me so sick. Thanks

Are you aware that there is a complication of RNY that causes hypoglycemia?  It's called noninsulinoma pancreategous hypoglycemic syndrome (NIPHS) or post bariatric hypoglycemia. They aren't really sure of the cause but it may have to do with absorbtion.  The pancreas secretes way too much insulin and your blood sugars bottom out.  Have you talked to your bariatric surgeon about this?   If you have this, no diet will work.  I'm speaking from experience.  Three weeks ago I had 60% of my pancreas removed for this at Mayo Clinic.   Weight gain goes along with this.  In a year, I gained 15 pounds.  Since surgery, I've lost 10.  It's very frustrating because foods you use to be able to eat, now cause your blood sugar to bottom out.  And a food that is okay today, may not be okay tomorrow.  I got so I was dropping on protein shakes.   A lot of doctors are not aware of this complication.  Mayo is following 40-50 patients with this and think it may be the tip of the iceburg.  If you want more info on this, I'd be happy to send you a research paper from Mayo.  Read it and if you think it sounds like you, take it to your surgeon or an endocrinologist.  This isn't anything to mess around with.  You can pass out and have seizures from low blood sugar.  I was terrified it would happen while I was driving.  Hence, I always ate something before I got into the car. Email me at [email protected] if you would like the paper. Lyn

Can you tell us about what you are eating?  I have started the same thing (recently diagnosed with poly-cystic ovarian syndrome and hubby and I are trying to conceive).  I have just been able to cut out the "extras" I had been eating - crackers, and some sweets that had crept into my diet. Doc has put me on glucophage and between the diet and that I feel like my blood sugar isn't going up and down all the time and I'm not having terrible cravings for carbs like I usually do.  I have had several hypoglycemic "attacks" in the last several months.

I'm not sure if you want me to tell you what I eat or the original poster.

Before surgery, I stuck to mainly protein.  I would usually have a low carb Slim Fast shake or an egg for breakfast.  For a mid morning snack, it was a Pria Protein Bar (Choc Mint, yum).  That has enough carbs to get my sugar back up to the 80's and enough protein to keep it there until lunch.

Lunch was usually cottage cheese and maybe string cheese.

Afternoon snack - a pure protein bar

Supper - some sort of meat and a small amount of veggie.

My endo said the best thing to get your sugar back up is milk.  It has sugar for the instant up and protein to keep it there.  However, milk isn't very portable, so I always carried a Pria protein bar with me. Fortunately now, I'm not having any low sugars!    So I'm not forced to snack.  Now I just have to get my mindset away from the constant snacking and grazing.

Unfortunately I don't know of a diet...but Im glad to have read this post. I was a "high sugar" diabetic pre surgery and started having more frequent episodes of low sugars even during the night..and wondered what was happening.  I have a tendency to graze so i thought it would be helpful when my sugars drop...i keep candy around (jolly ranchers/mints) to zoom my sugars. I couldn't figure why this is happening now I feel that I have an answer and reason. Great post!

Well, all I can tell you is what has worked for me.  I've learned by trial and error that when I eat things high in fat and anything with a relative amount of sugar, I experience 'reactive hypoglycemia' 2-3 hours later.  My blood sugar drops unbelievably and I have to eat a protein and carb combination to get it back up.  If I don't have any food available, I'll take a glucose tablet ****ep in my purse at all times****il I can get to eat something.

I've learned that the ONLY way I can keep this from happening is when I stick to proteins, veggies and fruit.  I totally stay away from sweets and high fat foods and when I do, this NEVER happens.  I don't think there's a 'diet' for this - just eat right and stick to the pouch rules!  It works for me and I keep my weight off as well!

God bless!
