Gaining weight!
I am just over 3 years out from the Roux-N-Y (or whatever) surgery and have lost 174 pounds total. About a year and a half ago I had a hysterectomy. I still have my ovaries so I still "cycle", but am very "irregular" about it. The last couple of months or so I have put on about 10 pounds but I haven't changed my eating habits any. Do any of you think the weight gain could be from the hysterectomy? Maybe I'm just grasping here, but I can't figure it out. I went through hell to get this surgery and to have it come creeping back on me is just so depressing. All my blood work has come back excellent, my cholesterol is excellent, my health is the best it has ever been. Am I just making too much of the 10 pounds I have gained back? I need your honest opinions here, please! I also wondered if it could be due to the hot weather we've been having so much of? Please understand, I'm not whining or complaining-I am super grateful for what I HAVE lost, I'm just concerned that if 10 came back, will more weight creep back on me? I'm way more active than I have ever been in my life, I eat better than ever, I just can't figure it out. Thanks and God Bless everyone!!
I have a few thoughts. Alot of people experience some "rebound" at about 2-3yrs post op. Surgeon's will speak of this as a normal thing that happens with some patients. You said that your eating hasn't changed and that's wonderful! I know whenever I put on a few pounds its b/c I have not been following the rules and have been having a bit too much food fun. Has your exercise routine changed at all?? When I am diligent about exercise I can eat way more b/c I'm burning up way more. The hysterectomy could certainly have changed things in your body~a change in hormones or using hormone replacements can cause some women to gain weight.
I would say try changing things up and see what happens. Keep doing all the good things you're doing~pushing protein, taking in lots of water, no drinking w/meals, exercise, etc~but maybe just change up your routine a bit. You can always track your stats at fitday or sparkpeople to get a really clear picture of how many calories you're taking in and burning daily. You can always try cutting back your calories a bit to see if that helps.
Hardest of all, try not to panic. 10lbs is manageable. If you're still working at it and the pounds keep creeping on, I would call your surgeon and nutrionist and see if they have any insight into how the hysterectomy could have changed things physically and what you can do to combat it.
Good Luck and keep us posted on how things are going for you!

Ditto to what Tracy said...address things you know may be compromising your maintenance but don't freak out. I haven't had a hysterectomy, but I have heard that some weight gain is expected in response to changes in hormone levels. I would call my GYN and see what they could offer to assist in terms of checking levels and some options to stabilize things if they're too off. All the best to you!
Even if they left your ovaries, the blood supply to them has been cut off by about 1/2. They will slowly shrivel up to nothing - bet they didn't tell you that - me either, I had to find out the hard way. I gained weight too - please go have your hormones checked and get onto some bioidentical hormones before you gain a whole bunch. It really messes with you. You can do the testing via the internet at zrtlab.com and find a doctor who will perscript the bioidenticals - they are least likely to cause breast cancer or anything as they are made exactly like the ones our own bodies make. A good book to read is "Hormone hell to Hormone well" and you can get it through amazon.com.
Keep us posted!
