Help!!  I have started loosing my hair again and I am wondering if it could be related to increased exercise without increasing my calories.  I had my surgery about 1 & 1/2 years ago and have lost 225 pounds.  My current weight is 153.  I recently started jogging and run about 2 miles each morning and then walk for another mile &1/2.  Then in the evenings I do my regular work outs whi*****lude spinning classes or treadmill, water aerobics and weight training. I eat about 1500 calories each day and faithfully log all of my meals on sparkpeople.  I usually get in around 100 gram of protein each day. Is it possible that I need to up my calories??? Any help or advise would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Jody

First of all, YOU GO GIRL!  Your loss is to be commended and it sounds like you have a exercise routine that really kicks butt!  Are you still losing weight or just maintaining?  I know when I was losing, there was a little hair loss for a few months, but nothing considerable.  Since then, there's been no hair loss.  What I do know is that when my B12 is low, my hair and nails tend to get dry and brittle and breakage becomes a problem.  I've read over and over how much discrepancy there is among doctors and the labs they request, so maybe a full run-up may uncover the cause. Your protein and cals sound great, so I wouldn't change that until your doc ruled out any micronutrient deficiencies.

Man Im tired just reading about your routine ----Way to go!!!!   fabulous Loss too. In my non professional opinion I believe it is probably a lack of protein issue. I know that when I slack on protein, mild hair loss is my first clue. Good luck though and Keep up the GREAT work!!! Diana RNY 9/17/03 360/200/still aiming at 180

Common reasons for hair loss are stress (aka rapid weight loss, emotional, etc), iron deficiency, thyroid issues, protein deficiency (but sounds like you get a decent amount given your weight), etc.  You may want to get some blood work checked. Kathy

Congratulations on all of your success Jody!  I was very interested in your post b/c I've been losing alot of hair lately too.I thought maybe it was weather related b/c it happen to start falling out again right around the beginning of the warmer weather, but I have no clue. Even my hair dresser said that she noticed quite a bit of fall out that wasn't happening 8wks earlier. I think my problem might be due to my protein intake~I'm generally pretty good about it,but I did go thru a short phase where I wasn't eating enough protein and I guess that could have started it.  I will check back to see what other reponses you get. Hope it stops falling out soon!!!!!!!!

it wouldn't be calories, because you don't want empty ones. but some ppl do as much protein in supplement as they want to weigh. I do more opposite, in that I want to weigh around 112, but do 180g protein IN SUPPLEMENT, plus whatever I get from food.

As others have said, full set of labs would help. Including thyroid, male and female hormones.

What kind of schedule do you use to get that much protein supplement ?  I need to get more (protein) in, and curious - do you drink several shakes a day or what ? Thanks for all the info you give.... DeAnna

I do 6 drinks, 30g each. 8 oz or less.

I do a low quality collagen when I first open my eyes (it's nasty, only for the really determined protein consumers), then shower, brush, tidy up and all.
1st real drink with coffee (only one)
bfast
another 30g
meal/snack
another 30g
meal/snack
another 30g
dinner
another 30g

and somewhere mid-day I get another. And of course, water in between all that.

I've been doing 3 with 23gm protein in 12 oz glass during the day - think I'll try your way with 8oz, scoop and almost a half, and add several more a day....Thanks D
