Snickers Protein Bar?

I am shopping around for protein bars, and I happened to purchase a Snickers Marathon Protein Bar. It as 21 grams of protein,  9g of fat (0 trans fat) and 20g of sugar.  The sodium was really high too (200mg).  I was cautious in buying this bar because of the sugar content, but I kept thinking  that it may work because it is so high in protein.   When i bit  into this bar it tasted just like a real SNICKERS BAR!  Instantly I know that I shouldnt have bought it, because I could eat at least 3 of these. I ate half and threw it away. I need help with choosing protein bars, and how to use them.  Are they to be used in place of protein shakes? Thank you

If you can find the Snickers Marathon Low-Carb Protein Bars, they're fine -- about three grams of carb per bar.  I love the Power Crunch Bars -- chocolate or chocolate-peanut butter or peanut butter fudge -- and Oh Yeah! Bars -- chocolate mint.  Power Crunch and Oh Yeah! bars aren't a dense as some protein bars are.  I try to find bars with at least 15 or so grams of protein in them,  and 5 or fewer grams of sugar. My rule is one protein drink (I do Unjury) a day and one protein bar a day.  If I skip a meal, I can have another protein bar.  But they are all really high in calories, I think, and they aren't cheap at all. Your mileage may vary.... Lisa

There are two kinds of protein bars that I like.   Pure Protein Chocolate Peanut Butter 190 calories 17 g. carbs 1 g. sugar 1 g. fiber 20 g. protein Kashi GoLean Crunchy! Chocolate Peanut 180 calories 5 g. fat 30 g. carbs 13 g. sugar 1 g. soluble fiber 5 g. insoluble fiber 9 g. protein You can buy the Pure Protein bars at BJ's Wholesale club for around $15-16 a case (can't remember exactly how many bars are in a case, but I think it works out to less than $1 per bar).  The Pure Protein bars also come in a 'smores flavor and a chocolate chip cookie flavor, but I did not like them as much as the chocolate peanut butter.   I do not use protein bars every day.  If I hit mid-day and my protein numbers are low for the day, I will sometimes eat a protein bar.  But I'm mindful about how many calories these bars have.  I will not eat protein bars that contain more than 200 calories, and there are very few that meet that requirement.  Keep in mind that most protein bars are designed for athletes who need lots of proteins and lots of carbs; net result is that many bars are 300-350 calories.   I do use protein bars when I'm traveling and when I'm out running errands.  They are convenient when I'm traveling because I don't always know that I'll be able to find something I should eat when I need it.  (I eat 6-7 times over the course of the day, about 200-250 calories each time, similar to what a diabetic is encouraged to do.  That's just what works for me and my body is very accustomed to that schedule, so I try to stick with it when I'm traveling.)   If I have errands to run and I know I'll be out during one of my meal or snack times, I throw a protein bar and a piece of fruit in a bag.  Then I have something with me I should eat and won't be tempted to buy some fast food because I'm hungry.   Regarding bars vs. shakes, the shakes are often less calories for as much or more protein.  So more bang for your buck, so to speak.  But sometimes the bars are more convenient... Good luck finding something that works for you!!! Kellie

Ditto on the Power Crunch bars.  I buy them on line and use them as a snack or meal replacement when I can't mix up my Unjury powder.  I have even frozen a couple of them for the extra zap of something special. Have to go with the low sugar.  It keeps me honest.

The sugar is a little high.  I don't dump so I don't have problems with that amount of sugar.  Early out though, I ate the Atkins Advantage bars and the South Beach Diet Meal Replacement bats.  The SBD ones are 19 g protein and around 220 calories.  The regular sugar was low but the sugar alcohol is high.  Some people have problems with sugar alcohol.  They taste a little like rice crispy treats.

I think I tried every Sugar Free protein bar at Bariatric Eating and hated them all.  But I don't dump so I do eat some sugar.  I like Clif Bars, all flavors 240 cal 20g sugar 10g protein.  I keep one in my purse and a few in the car.  Much better than stopping for fast food! Michele

I like AdvantEdge Carb Control protein bar in the chocolate chip brownie flavor. Here are the specs:
  • 210 calories
  • 5g Total Fat
  • 3.5g Saturated Fat
  • <5mg Cholesterol
  • 135mg Sodium
  • 100mg Potassium
  • 22g Carbohydrates
  • 2g Sugar
  • 1g Dietary Fiber
  • 24g Protein

They aren't too bad for you and are tasty. I use them only on days when I have intense workouts such as spinning due to the amount of calories in one bar. They are fairly dense and one is sufficient and also helps curb the chocolate cravings I sometimes battle. Good luck in your search!

Good website to check out for low carb/low sugar/high protein items is netrition.com. Good variety, MUCH better prices then the websites that are for WLS grads and, in some cases, you can order one of a product to try it out. The South Beach Cereal Bars have been a mainstay of my diet for more then two years. Maple Nut is my favorite. All flavors are 140 cal, 10 gms of protein. If you have problems with sugar alcohols they might not work for you. I've got to check out the low carb Snicker's Marathon bars. Sound too good so maybe I shouldn't.
