I HAD AN I CAN'T DO THIS MOMENT LAST NIGHT
Hi Messageboard!
Just wanted to check in with all and wish you a wonderful day. I had an I can't do this Moment last night. I am on day 8 today of my modified TO program. I'll tell yah, deciding to do this exercise has been very elightening for me. I'm still an emotional eater and I am still addicted to carbs. I've learned that much.
It seems that the first two years after my surgery, THAT portion of my brain had been shut off. I truely didn't have the symptoms of emotional eating nor did I crave simple sugars. It does appear that those symptoms have returned. I am hoping to push ahead and hope that my pouch does the rest. I remember watching a Science American program that Alan Alda hosted where they followed people for a year doing different types of weight loss programs. One was a Gastric Bypass Patient. Alan Alda was talking with a doctor who stated that in many Gastric Bypasses, there is a portion of the stomach that stops secreting the enzyme that send the message to the brain that you want to eat. They have isolated what these enzymes are and are studying them. At any rate, he said that in 35 % of the patients, this enzyme finds a way to regenerate. The amazing body's ways of healing itself I would imagine. The kicker is this....in a large number of GBP, the study found that they secreated an excess of this enzyme in their stomachs. Hence, the compulsion to overeat.
So I am left to wonder, is this what is going on with my pouch? I do realize much of this with me is emotional but I have to acknowledge that it is a physical issue too.
Well folks, just wanted to let you know that I had an I CAN'T DO THIS moment last night and that I am feeling better this morning. Thanks to HQ for helping me through the rough spots!
That study sounds very interesting. I'd love to hear/learn more about it. I deal with emotional eating~sometimes I have great control and other times I fall off the deep end. Actually neither option is very good b/c wanting/needing total control is my obsessive side and swinging too far the other way is my out of control, don't give a damn attitude~and then on alot of days I thankfully find my happy medium and feel "normal". Good Luck to you with the rest of your TO and keep us posted on how its going!

Hi dear friends
I believe it's called ghrelin. I found a lot of information on the web. Sure wish I could find the Alan Alda special listed somewhere! It was absolutely facinating. I will keep surfing to see if I can find any links to the show information. I saw it awhile ago so who knows...
Thanks for your supportive words this morning. You are all just fantastic! Onward and upward!
Hi All!
It is called Ghrelin. This is a hormone secreted in the base of the stomach (which is bypassed). There has been much study going on about ghrelin, and it appears that it tells the brain that you are hungry. They have found ecxessive secretion of this in obese people. Thus, the "failure" at so many "diets". Once you have RNY and that portion of the stomach is bypassed, the ghrelin production dissipates to very very low levels. This is why many of us do not ever feel "hungry", just a little "empty". Over time, usually years, the ghrelin levels will go up again, but never to the levels of pre-surgery where you get the hard core cravings or feelings of "being famished".
My surgeon discusses ghrelin and it's role in weight gain and obesity at his seminars in length.
I think the important thing to remember is to sit back and "listen" to what your body is telling you when you think you are hungry. Is it true hunger?
