timeout/pills/newfastdiets????
Ok lets see here. I was MO because I tried to keep my weight under control by first taking diet pills and fasting, then trying all these crazy fad diets. I yo-yo'd back and forth. I have gained and lost weight like you couldn't ( I know all of you can) imagine.
Then my dr and I decided that it was time to try RYN. Surgery. I took the time to learn all I could. I see a nut, physician ,cardiologist, psychiatrist, sleep drx etc....I have been told that I need to change my ways if I want to be successful. I need to learn to eat a particular way. Protein first, plenty of water and no snacking.... can I do it???? Of course I say and then boom Sept 05 I have this miracle surgery and low and behold it works. I works great. I have lost 120 pounds, I feel wonderful I look fantastic. but ohoh now I feel that I am not loosing as much, and why.... I am eating the wrong foods and don't comply to the program 100%. I may comply 90% and that is helping me to not be to to bad, but......
so then I come here to OH and I see wow, if I want I can try to fast for days and loose weight..... even when I was first out of surgery I was advised to eat more than just protein drinks..... hello isn't that were I started, isn't that how I got to be MO in the beginning? I know I was only 5 pounds when I was born. I had to have done something to become MO.
so instead of trying to beat the system and try to take the fast fad diet way out I have tried to get back to basics. Eat properly like a normal person and exercise, that was the agreement that I made in order to have this surgery and that is direction I will take. funny how those who are truly successful understand the compliance is key. Don't fool yourself and start playing around with fast/fad diets.
so sorry if I have ruffled feathers, this has been bothering me for some time. I think if your messing with this kind of behavior you are only going back to what put you here in the first place.
Please understand this is only my opinion and yes by going back and eating healthy I too have started to loose very similar to those of you who are on the all liquid diets.....
by the way I do wish you all good luck

I agree with you about the compliance issue. That is the real source of long term success. But I just assumed some people use the "time out" approach as a way to recommit themselves and jump start their motivation. Kind of like a physical retreat from the real world of eating. It won't be any more successful in the long run if there isn't long term behavioral change (i.e. exercise and proper eating), but some people tend to do better with changing habits if they have a time of a clean break.
But you're right to raise the red flag of warning that this behavior could be a mirror of previous behaviors that actually contributed to becoming morbidly obese. If you think you can always turn to a short diet rather than develop long-term healthy eating habits, your success and health can be compromised.
I guess it is all in how you use your tools,
Sally
Yep, good post Sally....perfect! I paid good money for my pouch....I'm going to use it correctly to my benefit! I worked on the behavioral issues long before my surgery and needed to pull myself back to reality....along with my pouch. Pouch, not stomach! T/O is forcing me into a reality check. That's all. Nothing more, nothing less...than a miracle!
As always, great discussions ladies!
Well, I didn't see a 'nut' before surgery 6 years ago but I DO know that we all overeat for a reason and it usually doesn't even have to do with the food. We stuff ourselves full because it's our 'drug of choice' and we're trying to cover up pain inside of us and each of our pain is different. If we don't deal with what caused us to eat in the first place, we will go back to eating the way we did before surgery and thus gain our weight back.
I had to deal with abandonment from my mother and it wasn't until this year that I finally forgave her and I honestly don't 'live to eat' anymore - I 'eat to live' and therefore am learning to eat like a thin person and only eat when I get a hunger pain. I did gain back some weight but once I started eating like this, the weight started dropping off and it hasn't stopped yet. I eat one thing every hour sometimes and other times I only eat when I'm REALLY hungry. So far it's working, and I don't feel deprived and I feel like a normal person for the first time. Life IS good after RNY and you CAN be successful but you have to want to be thin forever MORE than you want the food. Nothing tastes as good as being thin feels!
Hi Donna!
I haven't been on this site for a couple weeks and logged on just now and found your post.
One question...why the
??? This is a support board for sharing ideas and PLEASE take the shopping cart method. You don't go to the store and take everything on the shelves even if you don't need it or if it makes you mad. You take what you need and leave the rest there for other people. Glean what you find beneficial to your situation and leave the rest. Don't get
about it.
I used the time out method myself and learned A LOT from it. Not so much the weight loss but the fact that it was a starting over point for me. There was a day I decided to stop my undisciplined eating and embark on a new and exciting journey to start all over. It was a renewal of all things I already knew to do. For me, I had a need to "do something drastic" instead of just "going back to basics". Just like my original surgery! Defnding my decision to use the time out program gives me flash backs of defending my original surgery to others who told me just to push away from the table and excercise. To each her own!

Hi Molly the
is due to the fact that I am really frustrated to see so many people using this kind of tool that got us all here as a short term solution. I am not against starting over, I too have had to regroup and I do try and support everyone in there decissions. To say to some one ok maybe you should try to go back to the basics is to me a good thing, but all this talk about only three drinks a day for weeks on end is IMHOP insane. I can't think of any NUT or DX telling people that it is healthy way to live.
I do take what I can for information and let the rest of it go. I like listening to people argue about the good and bad to soda and artifically sweeteners. I have my own opinion about those as well, but it seems on this board both sides of these arguments are discussed. As post op that are so far out and I respect that you are, we have to remember who is reading what we write and what they are doing with it.
All I wanted was for people to rememeber what got them here and try and not repeat that kind of behavior. Also if your far enough out the object shouldn't be about losing weight fast, it should be like everyone else. Take it of in a healthy and safe manner. Fasting in any form is never healthy.
Please don't take this as a slam in any sense of the way. It is just another opinion.

Donna,
I just wanted to point out that in every comment we make there will be an opposing opinion. I see things on here all the time that I disagree with, but I usually just overlook them or gently offer my own opinion. It bothers me that people post accountabiltiy for what they ate each day because when I was anorexic that was what kept me motivated. I wanted to eat less than my fellow anorexic friends and we all held each other accountable for every bite. However, I can see that the people who do post their daily intake are doing so to encourage each other to eat healthfully. I am assuming none of these post ops are anorexic and they aren't doing it to compete for the least amount of food consumed. It's just a personal difference in what I think is helpful and what other people think is helpful. I think we have to be careful not to use absolutes like we are the ultimate authority on things. My surgeon is actually on that advocated the Time Out plan and a fellow patient was kind enough to share it with us because it is helping her. I think it's good for those who need it and do so under medical supervision. Like you, I also go back and forth with common arguements not only on here, but within my circle of friends. Are sodas ok? Are artificial sweetners safe and do they cause cravings? Do I have to drink plain water or can I count all fluids? Everything we use and consume from the time we get up to the time we go to bed can effect our bodies and our health and there are debates on everything from plastic containers to teflon coated pans to antiprespirant. We just have to investigate for ourselves and find what's right. However, I wanted to also point out that there is scientific evidence that fasting is acutally good for you in certain cir****tances. There is research available on the healing benefits of water fasting, juice fasting, eating a raw foods diet, and long term low calorie diets. I will respect that your opinion that fasting is never healthy, but there are also medical opinions that show otherwise. As long as everyone knows that the things on this board are just peer advice and peer opinions then we can all chime in and no one will get hurt. Best Wishes.
Angela
I believe you are 100% correct. Fasts and crazy diets made me MO and eating a balanced normal eating plan now will keep me at a good maintainence level. Our bodies are not designed for liquid diets and with the rny having a stoma rather than the valve at the botton of the stomach the liquid protein runs right thru leaving one hungry in a very short time. Then these poor souls think the are failing because they are hungry. they arent failing - the poor advice they have gotten is failing them.
HUGS! to you and if you want to keep in touch send me a pm.
