I remember being denied surgery the first time. My second attempt at insurance approval I felt so desperate. I knew that this was a chance to save my life. I would have agreed to ANYTHING to have this opportunity.
I remember being told, you may never be able to eat a bagel or a piece of pizza, you may never be able to tolerate sugar, you may never be able to have another glass of Coca-Cola [my old favorite food] in your life, ARE YOU WILLING TO GIVE THOSE THINGS UP? And I said, yes, and I meant it, I would chose life over any of those things any day of the week and twice on Sunday.
And I am fortunate that I tolerate everything ['cept I've never gone back to soda], but when I feel myself wanting to regularly grab for those poor choices, I remind myself I can do anything I need to because I've been lucky to have another chance at life.
