Diet Soda / Carbonation

Can someone give me some feedback on carbonation? I've heard different views. I currently drink about 2 cans a day of Diet Mt Dew.  I can't stand coffee or tea so this is my caffine. Marie

I have also heard differing views.  Surgeons differ.  Mine is totally anti-carbonation.  The handbook they gave me said soda can "destroy your surgery."  That was enough to scare me away from the stuff forever.  But some other poeple drink diet soda with no problems.  I guess the jury is still out. Take care.

I agree with Tracy.  I do not touch it.  I read a lot about people who start eddrinking Diet Coke and start gaining weight.  I use to LOVE Diet Coke.  I gave them up and I will NOT go back there.  I drink Crystal Lite now and love it--Strawberry Kiwi is my flavor.

I do not know what they say about surgery is true, but drinking MT.DEW is one of the worse things that you could drink.Even though they took out the surgar you still have more caffiene than you do in coffee.I use to work for the company and would not recomand anyone who has had this surgery to drink this product. All that being said 2 cans a day is way too much.Try finding something more healthy to drink. We really do not need that much caffiene in our bodies every day.I would drink diet soda once in a great while when I want something different to drink. It sounds like you gave up you fod addiction for a caffiene addiction. Try to find something else that you would like to drink and make that your drink of choice. bob

My surgeon prefers us not to drink carbonated drinks - BUT did not forbid it except for the first year.  Before surgery, I used to drink 12 cans of Diet Coke a day.  After the first year, I started drinking one can of caffiene-free Diet Coke a day.  It's enough to give me my Coke flavor fix - but not excessive.  My personal belief is that we still have an entrance and an exit for the air/bubbles to escape, so it can't do any harm as long as it's in moderation.  Just my humble opinion .

I have mixed feelings about soda consumption.  I am an avid diet coke drinker.  I have regained 40 pounds after falling short of my goal by 20 pounds, so now I have 60 pounds to lose.  I went to a bariatric nutritionalist last week to help me get back on track and the first goal she had for me was NOOOOOOO soda at all.  She said that there have been studies that those who go back to soda are the least likely to maintain their healthy weight.  Although she did agree that this is probably not related directly to the soda but more often would reflect the "cheating mentality".  A little cheating here, a little cheating there.........weight regain here ya come.   So I have had zero soda now for a week and a half and it has been a struggle, but I feel much better for it and my water intake has increased  by leaps and bounds.  I am down 3 pound my first week.  Yay for me.  :)   Good luck to you! Yup, every surgeon is different. I didn't have any for six months and now I have 1-2 a week; I've found that I can't drink an entire 24 oz bottle and it goes flat. YUCK. But the new mini bottles of Diet Pepsi are perfect for me. My biggest concern with soda consumption is that phosphoric acid seems to somehow leech calcium from our bones. Given our nutritional issues, this seems like the very last thing we need. :( All that being said, I do enjoy the occasional diet soft drink. Just not nearly as much as I enjoy my iced low fat lattes from Starbucks.

I would be verrrry cautious. Our new plumbing leaves us prone to developing ulcers, so the last thing we want to do is put stuff inside that is shown to cause ulcers ~ caffeine, citric acid (including OJ and other citrus juices), tannic acid (found in all tea and cola products, regardless of caffeination levels). Just my $0.02! Yours, Nancy in CO

Good question.. I like to read different views on this subject ( As I sip on a can of diet root beer) My surgeon said diet sodas are ok in moderation and as long as they have no caffine. I don't drink as much as I did pre op but I do have one every now and then. I buy a 12 pack of diet root beer and it last me a long time. I asked my surgeon if diet soda can cause weight gain and he laughed. He said food causes weight gain, not soda. Soda has very little calories. I've been maintaining my current weight with an ocassional soda so IMO, they are ok. Just me and my surgeons two cents!

Thank you all for the responses. I am going to try and wean myself off of the Diet Dew.  I certainly do not want to cause any damage to my insides.  I'm going to try and go back to 3 protein drinks tomorrow and try and buckle down to get back on track. Thanks again Marie
