I got my labs back from my doctor and I need your help.  I think this was a nurse error because she was knew and needed to use a cheat sheet to check which color top vial went with which test.  I went to pick up a copy of my labs and there was a cbc and an iron panel.  NO B-12!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  I asked the nurse why there wasn't one and she went back to talk to the doctor.  She came back out and pointed to the MCH number under the cbc and said the doctor says you don't have a vitamin deficiency because this number is good.   He said he would give me the script for weekly shots anyway because it can't hurt and may help other things so I did get a script for the 10mL vial with 5 refills.  That pleased me, but I am still wondering about the labs.  Now I don't know what the number for b-12 actually is.  What is this MCH??? Mine is 33.4 THanks Rachael

Mean Corpuscle Voume, which speaks to the health of the cell itself. ???

Isn't iron, doesn't measure vitamin levels at all. ??

They just don't run the whole set. You'll need to find someone who WILL run the whole set.

Get copies ofwhat you've got, but then press to get al those vites done. I don't think I've ever met anyone who did not initially have vit D and PTH issues, until they jumped on it.

But right now, you'd be jumping into a hole. I don't know whether to point to 5,000 or 50,000. But not less than 5,000 of D, for sure.

You are SO not alone. Every now and then my PCP says, but your levels are fine, so you don't really need to run them again, do ya? HELLO? The reason they are fine is BECAUSE I have 13 yrs of labs to work with and tweak. I want to KEEP them fine, don't I? LOL He's nice, but he has to TRY. I figure, one hole in m y arm, so who cares how many tubes they take, you know? These are the closest we've got to a window as t whether I or you or he or she is next on the front page of the news with the latest in WLS deficiency.

P.S.  My year + long absence has NOTHING to do with my WLS, or my type of WLS. See my profile.

My bariatric surgeon runs the right tests, just not the pcp.  I can't get into see the surgeon right now because I am in a chaplaincy internship at a different hospital where I can't miss any days.  Anyway, in December, my surgeons lab tests showed my labs as such: vitamin A- .32 RetPal- .15 B-12- 347 B-6- 18 RBC Folate- 643 Vitamin D-OH- 37 C-Reactive Protein- 5.2 Intact PTH- 18 the vitamin D spiked to 64 in August and in September my B-12 was 1003.  It's drastic decline was what caused me to go to the doc in the first place.

I am not sure about your advice, maybe these numbers will help and try to explain it again :-)  I am a bit thick

Rachael

Thanks!!!!!!!!!!

Rachael:  Couldn't you get your surgeon to fax or send you a script for the correct labs?  You shouldn't have to see him to get this accomplished.  When I know I'm ready for lab work, I email my surgeon's Physician's Asst, and she sends me what I need, and then the lab just sends the results to them, and they in turn fax them back to me.  Easy system, and saves me from having an hour and a half drive to the surgeon's office.  Maybe they'll do this for you!
