Iron transfusions??
Well, I am picer than most. My ferritin was too high, briefly, but the speed at which it came down to normal was alarming! So, hence my own need to keep it up there.
I see ppl every day with single digit ferritin and sometimes it takes years to get it up over 100! Some hemas transfuse at 50, some at 100. I don't get that choice, so I have to do my best to keep it at the top of the range. Some ranges are 10-200, so my figure is not that bad. I had a 237, and the range that day was 12-232, so it showed high, but not really way too high. Ranges kinda float, anyway.
I like my iron at 80-90, so your 74 is in the ball park. Even if you raise your ferritin substantially, the iron might not move for a long wwhile.
Watching everything as the 800 ferritin camedown was fascinating. My husband was at 600, and we dropped 100 pts/yr until we hit 300's and then we tied to halt the decline, but we both dropped to appx 100 before we were able to turn it around. Scary. but even as it dropped, our iron remained in that 80-90 range.

Hi Michelle,
What on earth is magnesium oxide? I am looking for something to cure my constipation. My iron levels are low and my doctor had put me on special iron pills that made my constipation worse. I have been taking one of the bariatric advantage chewable iron once a day but I am still constipated, and feeling fatigued. I notice you seem to be very knowledgeable about the levels, can you advise exactly what our levels are suppose to be?
Unfortunatly, my PCP is not very knowledgeable about the deficiancies that gastric bypass surgery can cause.
Thanks in advance
Marie
The BA irons are 29mg? I start proximals on 150mg and my doc starts them on 300mg!
I want my iron at about 80, ferritin 200+, and if H&H are in normal levels, I'm good with that.
I have a list of where I want all MY levels to be, based on the years I've been doing this, studies I read that match real life for us (but not everything that comes along), and based on malabsorption.
Magensium citrate (in pill) helps with foot and leg cramping, even tho blood levels might be "fine". It's cheap, but harder to find.
Mag oxide is the more common one and doesn't help with muscles, as it stays in the gut, so hence why it helps counter the iron. THEy are not taken at the same time.
Iron with C, only
Mag can be taken with calcium and multis.
My PCP runs the tests for me, and despite my trying to teach him the little *I* know so he can help other WLS? He just waves his hand and says, "You know more about this than I do." But I want to add what *I* know to what HE knows, so we both end up with more info! He just wants me to take care of it.
With the mag oxide, the one I use is 500mg, so I take 2, and that works. BUT I was also using Miralax (which was rx and is now OTC), and take 4 stool softeners. Had done that for years, but adding the mag ox was the final step.
I take300mg Tender Iron, but it does not constipate me. Didn't change a thing.
