Anyone purchase Medical Insurance after wls ?
I'm hoping one of you Grads will be able to answer this question... After getting laid off, I applied to Kaiser for Medical Insurance. I was denied due to overweight and high blood pressure. I had to Cobra my old insurance at a cost of $631 per month (instead of Kaiser's rate of $265). I will have RNY soon. After I lose the weight, I wonder if Kaiser will accept me --- OR, if they might not want me BECAUSE I had the wls.... I'm wondering if the time to retire is here, but $631 per month is outrageous and Cobra doesn't last forever. Anyone have any experience with this ?
I can't say much about medical insurance but I can tell you that I'm having a heck of a time getting life insurance. I had my surgery over 3 years ago. The only complication I had was a stricture when I was about 6 weeks post-op. I tried getting life insurance when I was 18 months post-op and most companies responded that there was not enough data on the long-term effects of this surgery! Now, we all know that this procedure has been around since the '60s even though it has only been in the last 10 years or so that it has been used specifically for weight loss.
If they agree to cover you, I suspect that they may exclude anything to do with WLS or charge you out the wazoo for premiums.
Good luck to you!
