This and that

Hi all! I'm back from vacation and ready to get back to reality.  Only gained 3 pounds in 2 weeks of non-stop eating.  So now I have gained 15 pounds.  ARGH!  I only have myself to blame.   I am a carboholic.  I love them and they hate me.  I have to stop.  For those who don't know me or don't remember, I have NIPHS - noninsulinoma pancreatogeous hypoglycemic syndrome.  My beta cells are nutso and making way too much insulin.  It's a constant struggle to find the right combination of food that won't make my blood sugar drop like a rock.  Last night it was a hamburger without a bun and 1/3 C peas.  Dropped me to 48.  I think I've been using it as an excuse to eat.  If I don't eat, I don't generally have a problem.  So starting tomorrow, I'm going to try the protein shake thing for a few days and see how it goes.  I have real concerns about nutrition with that type of diet and how long a person can really do it without causing other problems.   I was also very bad during vaction with my vitamins and calcium.  Someone had posted something about a magnesium deficiency and it sounds like me.  So I'm really going to hit the calcium with mag hard and see if I start feeling better.   I also need to try to get back here more often.  It's great support and we all need that whether we're 3 days out or 3 years.

Starchy vegetables bottom me out, too Lyn.  All protein shakes diet blows...LOL  Then again, I detest protein drinks.  Can you try just eating protein-based foods? As long as you supplement properly, mostly protein is not going to hurt you at all.  Does get boring, though...take it from me.  *grin*

Hey Sherry, Good to see you posting.  I've tried the all protein thing, and I will even drop on that once in a while.  My brain doesn't seem to function well on all protein.  It needs carbs to think clearly.  However, when I add carbs, my sugar drops and then I get really stupid.  Can you say between a rock and a hard place?  I really need to be thinking clearly in the job I have.  We have standards to meet and some of them are 100% accuracy.  Not too easy when you're in a brain fog.    I've contacted Mayo to have the calcium stimulation test set up.  So we'll go from there.  The way I feel today, I'd have surgery tomorrow if they'd let me.  When my sugar is goofy, I am so pooped I can hardly function.  And I can't think having a high insulin over a long period of time can be too good for the body.  Especially for the wt gain issue.  Or lack of wt loss.

It's called noninsulinoma pancreatogeous hypoglycemic syndrome.  It happens after gastric bypass surgery to some patients.  The beta cells of the pancreas just go nuts and produce way too much insulin.  You need to see an endocrinologist.  I will email you privately and attach a paper from the doc I'm seeing at the Mayo Clinic.  Don't let this go.  Please take the paper to your WLS doc or to an endo.  They are seeing this more frequently as more surgeries are being done.

hey Lyn ... welcome back.   I was just thinking about you this morning ... I have an appt with the endo ... but they don't think there's anything wrong (well, maybe that's harsh ... they've put me on precose, but when I went into the hospital to have the gallbladder out 3 weeks ago it wasn't given to me, and I haven't taken it since) ... have not run any tests, so I think I'm just wasting my time here ... granted, I haven't passed out/had a seizure since February, but these things are so intermittent and I don't know what sets them off, and I am wondering if this is just something I have to deal with. Anyway ... definitely keep me posted  ... you headed back to Mayo in June? karyn
