Has anyone heard that carbonated drinks will stretch out the pouch?

Not sure about that.  My pouched stretched over time but I can't blame soda on that.

Can I assume we are talking DIET, right? Stretching of the pouch would be a moot issue with real sodas. You know, this is one of those things that someone recently invented. Back in the olden days, they said no carbonatin for 30 days. I think they knew that if we got air, we'd burp. Ppl who do not live with a pouch maybe think we are too stupid to burp?

I'm 12.5 yrs. Don't drink diet sodas now, but did for many years. I still have plenty of restriction.

The thing to beware of is the BROWNESS of the drink. Coffee, tea, cola, caff or decaff. All can cause calcium to excrete (and it's a life long issue, as is) and can cause kidney stones (to which we are highly prone).

Soooooo, if you want a diet 7-up or something, maybe a fountain drink would be better? They are less carbonated, more flavor.

P.S.  My year + long absence has NOTHING to do with my WLS, or my type of WLS. See my profile.

I have heard both yes and no.  It just depends on who you talk you.  I have even gotten different answers from different surgeons.  There are no real studies dedicated just to this topic.  I know people who do and who do not.  I personally do not, but I was never addicted to soda to begin with so it is not hard for me.  Now, chocolate is a different story! lol But i would follow the advise of going for the clear and sugar free sodas.  All the nutritionists (along with Weigh****ers and Quick Weight loss centers) agree that the more carmel coloring the soda uses the more sugar etc. you are getting even if it is diet.

I've also heard both yes and no.  My surgeon says "carbonated beverages will destroy your surgery", so that was enough to scare me away from the stuff.  Whether it is true or not, is diet soda really worth the risk?

I have heard that but not sure how true it is. I do know that it messes with vitamin absorption. We already have problems in this area but apparently carbination messes with the absorption of many of the vitamins we need. I avoid all carbinated drinks myself.. even if its not true it streches you pouch.. I would error on the side of caution for both those reasons.

My surgeon had told his patients that soda will not strech your pouch but it may pop some of your staple lines because of the carbonation.  You also need to becareful of the artifical sweetners they can increase your hunger.  I chose to stay away from soda all together.

yes I heard that carbonated drinks can stretch the pouch or burst the staples, but I do know several people that have gone back to drinking carbonated sugar free soda and don't seem to have a problem. They still maintain their weight loss., As for me, maybe 1/2 can of carbonated soda once a month,  if that much,  just for the taste and the way it curbs my thirst, but I don't crave it anymore really.
