Lose the Cardio, Lose the Weight: 1 Dr's view
One doctor's view on Cardio for weight loss. The dietician from my surgeon's office told me the best thing I could do for myself was to do resistance training since it permanently increases your metabolism through muscle building.

That is all well and good. However, cardio done after weight training does increase weight loss (having burned through a good amount of Glycogen stores). Cardio serves more than just weight loss. I agree whole hearted with the strength training, but feel it is a disservice to stop any cardio. The idea of building muscle under fat is not appealing to me.
Need to Clarify:
This guy is not a doctor but their was a doctor on a tv program that backed him up but that doctor said that cardio was the best exercise for the heart and resistance training was the best for losing and maintaining weight loss and so we should do both.

Thanks. This article seems to do a good job of explaining why we need to strengthen our muscles for long term weight loss. It also explains why we crave carbs after a cardio workout. The body is amazing in how hard it tries to maintain the status quo.
Michael Thurman actually says the same thing. He wants you to exercise slower and with more resistance for weight loss. Here is another related article.

I checked out all of the articles and found something of value in each of them. I agree that both weight training and cardio are important to do on a regular basis and I've had to retrain my thinking so that I am now doing weight training on a consistent basis without worrying about "bulking up" too much. So far its working out well!

It is very difficult for most women to bulk up unless its in your genes. In my younger days when I practically lived in the gym. I lifted and lifted in an attempt to increase by biceps. I didn't want to look like a body builder but my arms are naturally on the small side and I wanted more definition. Sadly my arms stayed very thin although my thighs tend to bulk and build muscle fast. Even when I wore a size 7 at 5'10 I had muscular thighs but long scrawny arms.
