To weight daily or Not?

I am wondering how many of us weight daily & if it makes a difference. Sometimes when I read posts of those that put on 10 pounds or more , it appears they seemed to forget they needed to keep an eye on whats happening. I know that pre-op I weighed occasionally and was always shocked at the gain (sometimes even as much as 40 pounds gained never even made my clothes feel different) I guess at 360..40 unds wasnt a big deal. Now at 200, 2 pounds makes my pants tight or lose.  I know for me getting on the scale every morning & seeing my Surgeon once a month (yes I know im  3 years + post op but I still see him once a month, ok im a bit attached ;-) ) I kinda behave better because of what the scale says...a little lose makes me want a bigger one & a gain makes me want to sew my mouth closed. Didnt say it was healthy just that I do it. Even though I am always complaining about not being able to lose my last 20 pounds,  I just know that one of my biggest fears is not getting on the scale for lets say a month and having a 10 pound gain. I would be crushed. I face my weight # everyday be ot good or bad. How about you? Diana RNY 9/17/03 Dr. Roe 360/200/still aiming at 180

I'm with you.  I weigh every day first thing in the morning and write it on a calendar I keep in the bathroom for that purpose.  My weight can slip up over night ,and when it does, I try to deal with it that day.   At least, I have no surprises. I would not mind seeing my doctor once a month if he would see me.  I go to the support meeting at the hospital where my surgery was done most months.  I weigh there.  They give me a tape off the scale and I fasten it on a piece of paper with the tapes from previous months. You and I may be a little complusive, but it seems to work for us.  It has been two year for me and I am at goal weight.  I try to lose a little below, but my body will not let me go down and stay down.  I have to watch my weight continuously.  I am not bragging.  I know I might start gaining and not be able to stop, but it will not be a surprise.  Also, I know "life" events can effect a person's  weight .  I am counting myself blessed--so far, so good.  262/130 5'1" 62 years old

I used to weigh every day.  Many times every day, in fact, and it got to be a REAL problem.  When several people pointed out that one can develop an eating disorder at any time in his or her life, and my fear was paralyzing me, I began to see my therapist.  So what may be simple accountability to some people can become an obsession with others.  I'm working now on weighing once a week.  Lisa

I'm a daily weigher and have been for over a year now.  I track my weight in software in my PDA from calorieking.com so I can see trends over time.  I use the same software to track my food intake and exercise.  By having all this information in the same place, I can see how my weight loss is affected by my food intake, diet composition (carbs vs. proteins vs. fats), and exercise.  I'm a very data-driven, analytical person so this works well for me.  I still work on not getting upset when the scale goes up.  I remind myself that there are so many things that cause our weight to fluctuate on a day-to-day basis that it's not healthy to focus on the daily number.  So after I record my weight each day, I use the calorieking software to look at how my weight has trended over the past year.  As long as I continue to trend downward over time, I try not to worry about the daily numbers.  Daily weight fluctuations are just reality.   Good luck for continued success on your journey -  Kellie

Hi Diana! I've been a daily weigher since I hit goal. I weigh  myself first thing in the am and track the weight on my calendar so I watch for any trends due to time of the month or whatever. My therapist asked me last week to drop back to only every other day~she's not against daily weighing, but for me, the weight that I see and record can make or break my day (as far as mood goes). Even knowing that there are fluxes from day to day, if I see any weight gain I have to be honest and say that it bugs the heck out of me for the day~even though the rational Tracy knows that this is normal and not a problem. I guess its my fear of gaining weight that takes over my brain, LOL. It's been hard this week to cut back to every other day b/c it was such a habit, but I've stuck to it so far. I know alot of people just use how their clothes fit from day to day as a guide, but for me I need to visually see that ### on the scale.

I weigh every single morning (except weekends).  It is amazing how much my weight fluctuates from day to day.  It can swing as much as 3 to 5 pounds in either direction within a 24 hour period.  I have no idea why; although on days that I do not get my water in I tend to weight more the next day but one days I get lots of water in, I weigh less.  My clothes do not fit any differently, so it does not really concern me,  Anyway, that plus the Weigh****chers weigh-in keeps me honest and on top of things.

I do not weigh every day, but I had my surgery on a Wednesday and always weighed myself every Wed. morning, so I still do that to this day.  Its just a habit for me now, and I think its good to check in with myself and keep tabs.  My weight fluctuates about a pound or two, but I figure I can get a handle on it quicky if I know I'm up more than I want to allow myself.

I have to join the weigh every day bandwagon.  Prior to surgery, I didn't own a scale.  I don't know if that contributed to my ending up at 351 pounds or not.  I've asked myself the question, "what would you have done about it if you knew you were at that weight?"  I know surgery was my only option.  I don't think I could have been any more miserable seeing my weight creep up over the years.  I just knew I was big, really, really big. I weigh myself everyday because I live in terror that I will return to old eating patterns and regain the weight.  I see it being incredibly easy to start grazing on the simple carbs, I find myself letting myself have a sweet  'treat" too often.  I know I will have to weigh myself like this for the rest of my life or I will slowly add those pounds.  Some days I eat a little more, some days a little less, and I use the scale to keep it in balance.  Sometimes I do worry I am too obsessed with the scale, I think I would be really upset if my scale broke, or someone broke into my house and stole it,  The battery on it died, and I *immediately* went out and bought a replacement battery.  So for now, weighing daily works for me, and I don't think it is making me too crazy. i weigh every morning at the same time.  i avoided the scale at all costs before and was shocked when i finally did weigh.  i won't let it happen again.  i also still  track my food everyday.  i plan my meals/snacks in the morning and put them into fitday.

I weigh every couple days.  During the first 6 months or so I didn't even own a scale, but now that the honeymoon is over I want to keep up with things better.  Keep losing the same 3 pounds over and over and over, LOL.

Like most of us pre-op I never weighed and whenever I went to the doctor it was always a big surprise...

Do what works for you, some things I read seem a little compulsive but I guess there are worse things one can do.

Continued success............
