Needing to remember basics
I am 5 years and 3 mo out. Recently due to a new medication, I gained 25 pounds. Went from 189 to 212. 200 was my magic number, but I still can't seem to get back on track.
I am never full and hungry all the time. I was trying to remember if there were rules about drinking when eating. I always drink tea with my meals and after my meals. Could I be washing down my food to fast. I had a RNY.
Any help would be appreciated. My highest weight was 250. I still would like to get down to 165.
Thanks.
Debbie
Hi Debbie,
I am far from an expert in this area and definately do not alway use the best food behaviors, but I can tell you that my surgeon and nut both advised me not to eat with my meals or for at least 30 minutes afterward...In many area's I have strayed occasionally from the original rules laid down, but not this one, primarily because I think drinking with or soon after takes away the pouches ability to tell if you are full and remind you to stop eating...I know there alot of posts out there with theories on this... I personally know a fellow post op who drinks diet soda with all meals except breakfast and that person has regained all their weight but about 50 lbs, they recently saw a doctor about what is going on and found out the stoma exit hole is now twice as big as it originally was, don't know if it is related to eating and drink together, but definately know I'm not willing to take a chance on that...
Good Luck, you might post to the main board about getting the basic original pouch rules, newbies are the best source (I think) because they are in that phase where the rules are a real focus...

Hi Debbie!
Definitely do not drink and eat at the same time! I posted this week about having to
get scoped and have injections in the stoma because it was too big...and the reason
it is too big is because I would take a big gulp of water, soda, chrystal light etc. after
each bite! I have gained about 50 lbs - but thankfully due to the injections - I should
get back on track!
Check this out...I plan to live by it!

What kind of injections are you talking about? What did they do? Was this an outpatient thing? Was it your surgeon who did the injections? I have been contemplating seeing my surgeon again regarding my ability to eat more than I used to and being hungry more often than I think I should be.
Thanks for this information

Debbie I am so glad you posted this and sure makes me realize you must stay on top of things! I did not know this until I started reading posts again on OH (just recently)! I don't know if I heard it and forgot or what. My surgeon told me that we don't - in reality have a 'pouch' - I didn't thinking about the opening stretching and the impact on feeling full. I went through that stage of being so hungry all the time and my blood surgar was really whacky. Kind of realized on my own that drinking while eating seemed to mess with BS - but didn't connect the size of the stoma. I'm 2 1/2 years out - I wonder if we are okay or will have to have physician intervention? Boy I wish I understood this better from the beginning.
