Pity Party for me

I'm having a pity party and I'd like all of you to attend with me.   I just got back from Mayo for the evaluation of the hypoglycemia.  I have NIPHS and will have to have 70% of my pancreas removed.  This is what I figured.  They increased the Precose to try and buy me some time but it isn't working.  I can't have surgery until at least the end of May due to my son's wedding and then a vacation already scheduled and paid for.   What has me really in the dumps is that I was also diagnosed with macular degeneration.  I'm pretty young for that (55).  So I'm having a several day pity party for myself.  When I think about how close we are to retirement and all the things we planned to do, this really throws a wrench into the works.  I know there are worse things that could happen.  But when all your activities you have a passion for involve sight, it's a hard pill to swallow.  I guess the good news is that it's early and still on the perimeter.  There is only a 5% chance I will lose sight in the next 5 years but, you know, someone has to be the unlucky ones to fall into that 5%.   The good news about the pancreas thing is that is the reason I've gained 10 pounds and can't lose it.  It isn't anything I've done or not done.  So maybe there is hope for me to get to goal after this is taken care of. Thanks for listening. Lyn

I am sorry to hear that  you are going through so much.   I hope all goes well with your son's wedding and then with your health challenges.    All I can say is to try to enjoy each day and event as it comes.  Perhaps your son's wedding can give you something to focus on.   I hope posting here helps you know that you are not all alone.

Wow, Lyn, you have been hit pretty hard.  I'm glad you came here to let us know.  I know absolutely nothing about the macular degen., but of course I realize it is a serious eye condition that affects your eyesight.  I sure hope that the process is very slow for you.  I know it must be hard to know that your future will eventually be affected by this, but you know--we all have (bad) things in our future that we DON'T know about, so we should ALL live our lives with daily gratefulness. Best wishes for your son's wedding and your vacation--some great things to concentrate on and look forward to!  And then hopefully the pancreas surgery will go very smoothly--and, like you said, help you to take a few pounds off!

I'm handing you a kleenex for your well-justified pity party!

Jo

Did you also post this to the yahoo group for grads?  You would not be the first person to have to deal with this, but we still know so little about it.  If you didn't, the link is:  http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Graduate-OSSG Since this happens to about 95% of us, it's critical to know.   I spoke to a local endo a few days ago and she absotlutely freaked out about anyone touching a pancreas.  I have to say it's pretty scary for me.  One tiny slice too much gone and you've got instant diabetes.  Did they say how they determined that 70% has to go?

Hey Michelle!  I've been thinking a lot about you lately!  I haven't checked the Yahoo Grads list lately (but I need  to ... I've been having severe hypoglycemia which has led to seizures) ... BUT ... the reason I've been thinking about you is I wanted to send you a pack of sugar-free PEEPS!  (but I kinda figured you've already discovered them ... and since I haven't been on the Grads list lately, I don't know the recent conversations about the peep obsessions). Oh yeah, musta been awhile, since we discussed this type of hypoglycemia all last week.  Peeps?  What are they?  LOL!  Someone gave me some S/F but I AM NOT TOUCHING THEM.  NO way, no how. 7 yrs, peep-free

dang Lyn ... not the news I was hoping to hear!!  70% is a lot!!  Geez, well, I'm sticking to the precose right now ... I haven't had any severe drops, but it happens SO intermittently that one never knows.  Well, you know the whole story already. Keep me posted girl ... I do not envy you. Luv ya, Karyn
