Update on hypoglycemia

Here I sit at Mayo Clinic.  It does appear that I have NIPHS, noninsulinoma pancreatogenous hypoglycemic syndrome.  My pancreas is just cranking out insulin. I still have to have  a CT tomorrow to rule out a tumor but they aren't expecting to see anything like that.  I haven't had the calcium stim test yet since it would have to be repeated when I decide to have surgery.  And I won't do that until June, I hope.  Have my only child's wedding in 2 weeks and then a vacation to New England the end of April first of May.  I'm too busy right now.  So in the meantime, I'm doubling the Precose and trying to stay away from triggers.  I can't always know what is going to drop me tho.  Last night it was chili.  I dropped to 37 at the hospital.  I was pretty close to hitting the deck.   Anyway, that's all from here. Hi Lyn I have alot of trouble with my blood sugar dropping.   I am confused because some times I have read and heard that is related to "dumping"  but I rarely eat anything with more surgar than about 7gr.  Usually I feel shaky and sometimes disoriented and it is almost always when I am exersizing of get stressed out or in a hurry to get off to work or someplace.  I do not eat any "sweets" at all.  The only carbs I eat are like wheat crackers with cheese or Kashi high protien cerial with 1% milk.  It sounds like you got your doctor to take it seriously...how? I fortunately have a great WLS doc who sent me to an endo.  The endo did his research and thought I might have NIPHS.  If you don't already, get yourself a meter and start keeping track of your sugars when you are feeling funky.  Take that and go to your WLS doc.  I'd skip over any PCP.  As far as I'm concerned they are all worthless.  Mine wanted me to come in and be "educated" on the proper foods to eat.  HA HA!  Like that would really help when I drop to 36 after eating something like chili.

Somehow, you have to get someone to listen and NIPHS has to be ruled out as does an insulinoma.  This has serious consequences.  You can have seizures from low blood sugar.  You can pass out.  For me, my brain gets foggy and I can't think as well.  I have noticed that I am making more stupid mistakes at work, like writing down numbers that I must be just picking out of the air!

Do whatever you have to do to get your doc to listen.  Send me your email addy and I will send you an article written by Dr. Service at Mayo.

May I ask what your issue's are?  I do not dump but if I ever eat cake icing I can count almost to the minute that 3 hours later I will be shaking and feeling like I am having what my mom terms as a diabetic shock.  I can quickly pull myself out of it with protein and I can function but would rather not.  There are no other sugars that bother me, unfortunatly!

I would say that if it only happens after eating cake icing, that's an easy fix.  Don't eat it.  Anything can drop me.  I dropped to 36 at Mayo after eating Wendy's chili with crackers.  Now tomorrow, it might not bother me but something else might.  I never know what will and what won't.   My issues are very low blood sugars after eating regular food, like chili, oatmeal, hamburger, an apple, yogurt.  I haven't passed out but I've come very close several times.  I'm to the point where I also don't have much warning that I'm dropping.  Which is very scary.   My insulin levels are very high when my blood sugar is very low.  Shouldn't be.  Should both be low or both be high at the same time.  My pancreas makes way too much insulin and responds inapporpriately.  It makes it next to impossible for me to lose wt and in fact, I've gained about 10 pounds I can't get rid of.

Hi Lyn,

Are you back from Mayo yet? FYI - I asked Eric if we could have our own forum for this and the answer was yes . I'm waiting for it to be created - there are at least 20 of us that I know of (and that I'm currently emailing with) that are all in the same boat.

Hi again I have a similar problem...it happens after I eat foods that really shouldn't cause dumping.  I am afraid to eat fruit and I do not eat sweets at all this morning it happened again after I had eaten cheese and some whole wheat crackers.  I will look for a kit to test my blood sugar so I will be able to show it to my WLS doctor.  Should I keep track of what I ate and how long after and that kind of sruff?  my e-mail is [email protected].  Please send the article. Thanks Madeline
