Thyroid removal

I used to be on this site all the time... Then depression hit as my weight loss stalled and eventually started to increase.  Well now I have an all new event going on in my life that is just sucking me under again.    I have to have my Thryoid out.. .the darn thing works fine according to all the bloodwork. I have NODULES..... Folicular Neoplasms w/atypical cells.... .  I was wondering if anyone else has had this happen after their WLS and how they handled it and if it is as bad as it seems.  Do you take the artificial hormones? and how is that going...  Surgery is going to be tough for me I think,... I have no support to help me recover I'll be on my own..  Well if nothing else say a prayer for me.... I haven't finallized any of the arrangements yet but will soon.. I have a meeting with a surgeon on Monday... anything I should be asking you think? (other than the obvious) What really sucks is that I have to go to a different hosptial now because the one I had my WLS at not longer takes AETNA...

I am now going thru this.  I just went for my ultrasound and they found cysts on my thyroid and just like you, my blood work was fine for the thyroid.  my calicum was down really low. But now I have to go for a thyroid uptake scan and then a biopsy. the thyroid is what causes the weight stall.  That was one of the symptoms.  plus other symptoms.. I will pray for you.   As my family is telling me I'll tell you.  Everything will turn out fine.  Hang on.  And the recovery, I hear, isn't bad at all. Good luck to you and me. Koukla 338/179

I don't have this problem, but I do have thyroid probs and know how that can make you feel tired and exhausted all the time.  If you can post, we will try to be there for you so you don't have to be alone.  i am sorry you both are going through this and will keep you in my prayers. Darlene

Donna, I have no info but all my prayers for you. Maybe drop a line on the Virginia Board? Natalie (Tink) had that very same problem and came through with flying colors. She did have to have her procedure moved to a different hospital. I met her at the convention in Lexington and she was "The Expert" on that very issue. Try there? Hope to hear you are looking back on this bump in the road soon! Best Wishes- Dx

also I forgot to tell you, my friend just had to have hers out and she was afraid of the recovery but she said it was nothing.  Her husband took off a whole week to help her but after the first day she sent him back to work.  She was out of the house the 2nd day. Hope this helps you feel better. But it still is scary.  I know yesterday I was a basket case.  Today too.   I'm just beginning the process.  I told my husband I wi**** was over.  It takes them so long to do things. again good luck to you (and me) Koukla

I was just diagnosed with hypothyroidism.  I've had my thyroid checked before and never had a problem, so who knows how it happened.  Anyway I've been taking T4 for almost a month and I've started losing again, I'm not nearly as cold as I was and instead of having horrible muscle cramps every night, last night was the first time in weeks that they bothered me.  I think taking care of this will help your weightloss start again. I'll say a prayer for you! Micha

I'm hoping getting the thyroid under control will kick start my weight loss again.  It's amazing how such a tiny gland can do so much damage.  I just took a shower and the hand full of hair that is now coming out.  This entire journey I didn't have any hair loss but now with this thyroid problem it's coming out by the handfuls. Thanks for the encouraging words. Koukla

Donna, I have not yet had weight loss surgery however, about 3 years ago I had 3/4 of my thyroid removed because of nodules.  They were highly suspicious... one was very large (cold scan) and the other was smaller but extremely hard (almost couldn't get the fine needle biopsy).   I have been on levothyroxine for 25 years and my surgeon says that I won't be hindered at all in the process of WLS and that there will not be any problem at all in taking my meds.  It is a very inexpensive pill, and small. I will keep you in my prayers.

Because of the cross... It is well with my soul

Thanks for your response.  I had the biopsy and the results weren't exactly what I wanted to hear.. I knew it was going to have to come out.. the nodules have grown and are growing... Glad to hear about the meds not being any problem..  Good luck to you with your surgery also..  Thanks,  Donna

any new info on your thyroid?  I just went for the thyroid uptake scan and Thursday I go see the doctor. Hopefully you're feeling better.  I hate  the depression it causes and the tiredness. (and I'm on prozac and still I feel depressed) I guess we just have to look at this as a little bump in the road on our journey. good luck. Koukla 338/179
