nutcracker esophagus

A friend of mine has nutcracker esophagus, and because of this has been told she can't have gastric bypass surgery.  She is on a nitroglycerine patch for this. Has anyone else ever heard of this?  Has anyone with this condition had the surgery? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Terri

I was diagnosed with this three years before surgery.  It was one of the reasons it was suggested that I have gastric bypass!  It will never go away, but the acid that was there preop was erosive to my esophagus.  I still have it, but it is 98% better and I have many fewer spasms! Samantha

Thanks Samantha.  Did you have open or lap RNY?  I had open and thought it wasn't that bad.  The friend with this condition said her doctor also said she would need open instead of lap if she was to have it done.  I have told her not to let that discourage her, but she really wants laproscopic.  She said she does't scar well.
