Hi everyone, im new to the grad site. My year out was Dec, 27, 06. I have lost a total of 158 lbs. I started in at 320, wow what a woman. lol.. Well my thing is, I am wondering if you have friends or family just come out and tell you that you look sick or like a aids vic, or ur just to skinny? Doc and Nut say im dead on with my wt and BMI. That is who i have gone by, i have met my goal and trying to maintain. If anyone has tips on maintaining that would be great. I dont think i look that skinny but im used to seeing the old me and still do at times. How ever i think the family is not used to seeing me skinny either and its a change for them. It really hurt when my mom told me she didnt want to put only bones in a grave stop watching what i eat. Well sorry i cant, this is my new life i choose!!! I broke my back a yr ago also that lead me to my choice and i wont go back to the wt or the pain it caused.. Sorry to dump on u all was only wondering if anyone has gone through this and some advise on it.. thanks again for any info.. greatly needed!!!

Simply tell those that feel the need to "share" their opinions that you appreciate their concern, but that you are following your surgeon's instructions and your nutritionist's advice, your weight is where it should be and you are satisfied with your results. You are probably correct in assuming that they are just not used to seeing you at this weight/size and it will just take some time. So long as you are happy with your health, your body and your mind, that's all that matters! Hugs! Kristi

Trust me.....someone will always have an opinion about your weight   and for some reason they feel free to share it.  They will all tell you how "sickly" you look, but just wait til you put on 10 pounds. Then you will hear about being careful about the weight you put back on.    AS long as your doctor and your nutritionist feel that you are ok....and you feel ok......then you are PERFECT.    Hang in there.

My orginal surgern told me not to exspect to get below 200 because im a large frame woman.. so im proud to be where im at. Thanks for your support.

Congrats on your loss! It sounds like you've done just amazing! I was the daughter of a WLS patient seven years before I was a patient myself and I can tell you it is shocking to see someone you care about deeply disappear before you. It was very scary for me to see my mom go from 312 to 144. However, in her case, she was unhealthy. She ended up in the hospital for a week, code blued four times in three days, etc. Because of what happened with her, I'm scared of my own weight getting too low. (Right now, I'm 8 lbs. below goal and for the life of me can't seem to gain anything!) If your surgeon and nutritionist are happy with your results and your labs are where they should be, then hold your head up high and know you are healthy. Thank your mom and others for their concern, but firmly remind them that you are under a doctor's care and you are healthy and where you should be. Also, maybe gently suggest to them that as time passes, they'll get used to seeing the "new you" and it won't be so shocking for them.
Blessings, Jennifer

Ty for your kind words, it is hard to watch some one loose the wt. My sister got on drugs and i saw her go down bad, but unhealthy. Today proud to say she is off, but now watching me loose it she is scared for me. I am reall happy with my self, if i can stay between 160-170 i will be happy. Im 5'10 and wt in right now at 163, so im right about where i should be. I am a large frame women so i think the little bone show i have shocks my family. I have pics in my profile on here if anyone cares to see them. Dont know how to add it to the avitar that everyone can see. But again ty for ur words they help alot. I just dont have alot of support around me and i tend to lean on this site. TY again

Oh Yes, EVERYONE has an opinion!!! I've often asked people why they are so concerned/obsessed with how much "I" weigh?!?!?!?! As long as your dr's say you are within a healthy range and you are happy/healthy then don't worry about what anyone else says. Everyone has different motives for why they say things to us~those motives aren't always good ones so just keep that in mind and don't dwell on what others say. Be happy with yourself b/c that's truly all that matters!!!!! Things do calm down the farther out that you get~I still get comments but not as often now. Good Luck!

Yes, being happy with our self is what truely matters! I love the new me, I think i am some what around ur size, 5'10 and im 163. My doc didnt think i would get below 200 cuz of large frame but i worked out hard to get there. I walk and ex as offten as i can. Med reasons i have slowed down a bit. I broke my back over a yr ago and i took another fall and blow more disc out of back but i am still up moving.. I will get it back and going.. I chart food on fitday.com to see how well im doing, its a great page to keep track of things on. Again ty for your kinds words they really help.

I am three and a half years out and have maintained my weight by keeping to the doctor's edict of 5 healthful meals a day.  Two of those meals are 30 gram protein shakes.  Protein helps maintain muscle health and healthy metabolism.  In addition, exercise is good, even if it's just walking.    Watching what you eat is important for general health - just remember the good habits you developed during your "honeymoon" phase and enjoy what you do eat.  Family just gets freaked out sometimes because they love us.  I bet you look marvelous! Good luck and God bless...................
