Ok, I am normally very discrete about my bowels, but I bet I have not had a good bowel movement i a month. I have gained about 4 lbs and I am sure I know what it is..... My back is killing me. I am bloated. Every time I eat something it hurts. I am eating salads, apples, prunes and flax seeds like no tomorrow. I even tried drinking warm water fast. I still can not go.... Forgive me but I even took two Exlax today. Honestly at a point where I feel I may have to do a cleanse. I do not know what to do, can anyone offer a suggestion. I have been reading a lot about constipation and cleaning out my colon and I am beginning to think this is my only hope. Please help! Lori 258/148

Lori I just saw my dr today and he told me Fleets enema will help. I stopped by CVS and picked up one, took less than 5 minutes to work and I fell like I dropped a few lbs. Good luck, if that doesn't help you should see the dr...I would lay off the food and just drink water till you go.

Current weight:120 and still 5'4

I would recommend calling your surgeon.  I would be concerned about ruling out a blockage.  I am sure he could also recommend some type of laxative for you.

Lori,  I also think a call to your surgeon is in order, especially if this is the first time in almost 3 years since your bypass that you are having this problem.  I just had plastic surgery 5 weeks ago and lost a little too much blood and now I am on iron supplements in an attempt to re-build the iron in my loss.  Iron is notorious for constipating you so I am taking Colace with each of my iron supplements and things started moving a lot better for me.  My point is that if you haven't had any reason to suddenly have issues with constipation, then by all means you have to call your doctor to rule out any of the bad things that could have developed.  Please don't take a chance on ignoring a blockage of some sort and keep us posted.  Joann

I suffered with constipation for the first year post op.  I had minimal success with over the counter type laxatives..But they seemed to harsh.  I would have plan when I would take it and be sure to be home.
I now take Miralax daily.  It's a prescription medication.  It is tasteless and mixed in your drink.  Constipation is one of my complications from my RNY surgery, the other is anemia.   I know the pain of being bloated and that whole constipated feeling.  Please don't suffer too long...

I would definitely let your surgeon know since you are so far out.   I have had these problems since the beginning and am now taking a daily laxative called Miralax (a prescription).  It works very well.  You might want to ask doctor about it.  Good luck. I know it is miserable.

Try Smooth Move Tea -- usually works pretty well.  If that doesn't work, definitely call your doc.  I've been hearing about too many people 2-3 yrs out having blockages. Good luck! Deb

I agree w/ calling your surgeon. I went thru this and was put on just about everything out there before I got constant relief~over the counter meds like MOM, benefiber, smooth move tea, laxatives, etc~no success. prescriptions like miralax and lactulose~no success. I actually ended up doing so much internal damage due to the constant constipation that I had to go to a colon/rectal surgeon and almost had to have surgery! I am now on a daily regimine of 2 zelnorm daily and 3 stool softeners every night. Also I have to get in at least 30g of fiber so I eat Fiber One cereal every day. It doesn't taste that great but it does the trick and doesn't cause bloat like benefiber. You may need to do a fleet enema or 2 to break up what's stuck before you will get relief. Good Luck and let us know how things are going for you! I know how painful and miserable this problem can be!

I've been there - I was trying so hard to go at one point, I think it was worse than childbirth (I'm serious).  I happened to have a baby enema handy and it worked!!  I would try an enema - you'll feel like a new woman!
