I was wondering if anyone has developed diabetes after surgery?  I am feeling terrible!  I have had bad headaches, extreme fatigue, very irritable, had a yeast infection for like a year and a half.  My gyno was the one who said on Thursday (after I finally went for the "itching" Sorry, TMI!) "How's your sugar been?"  I have had bad episodes with hypoglycemia and I always seem to be wanting to eat--especially sweets.  So I told him and he said that it was probably pretty high most of the time, in order to cause an infection like I had.  He ran some tests and I should find out the results Monday.  My ferritin is also real low--like an 8.  But it is up from last month when it was 5.  I feel like such a mess?   Has this happened to anyone else??? I am 2 years out and have had no problems but will be interested to hear how your test come out.  I understood the wls would probably keep us from getting diabetes.  Please keep us posted.

I just called the Dr.'s office and got my results.  My A1C was 5.9% and 6 is the cutoff.  The doctor isn't in the office till tomorrow so I won't know what his opinion on the results are till then. I'll post an update when I hear something. Amy

5.9 is normal blood sugars average for the past 3 months. So it has not been high during the time you mention.

Hi Amy, My docotors told me I had Diabetes  9 months after surgery. I was testing everyday. My blood sugar was really high over 300. Then it would drop to the low 30's. Constant headaches, Could not eat without getting sick. I mean really sick sweating, hot flash the whole nine yards it was bad. They but me on Metformin which I hated made me feel worse. My PCP finally gave me Nortriptyline it controls the sickness after I eat and some of the headaches not all. I don't take any Diabetes meds anymore. The headaches are still bad somedays and not as bad others I don't think they will ever know why I now have them or how to get rid of them. I would be happy if we could just control them. They told me that they messed up the hormones in my stomach and things just don't work the way they did before and because they don't know what is happening there is no way to fix it. All you can do is keep taking stuff until you find something that works for you they said. Please keep us posted I would like to know what they tell you. Good luck, Kim

Hi Amy. Do you have any history of diabetes in your family? Sometimes your genes come back to haunt you.  On my two year visit with the WLS we were talking about the fact that Endocrinoligists have not been supportive of their patients having WLS even though all of the studies point to diabetes being one of the disease entities that can be controlled or prevented when you lose weight.   He also points out that sometimes the damage we do to our bodies walking around with all the weight can come back to haunt us so that might be a factor too. The best of luck to you. Wilma

Amy, Don't worry yes your A1c is on the high side but your Doc will probably suggest keeping an eye on you at this point and possible monitoring your blood glucose levels. You will probably have to repeat the test in a few months to see how your blood glucose has been. Just don't worry yourself. Se how things go, there could be many reasons all this is going on.  All the best and take care of yourself, Malika.

I forgot to mention, I know because not long ago I was going through that whole process and nothing came of it, that's why I say, take it day by day because I kinda freaked out because I couldn't understand why I there was no trace of it before surgery and then this after all the weightloss. Things are fine now so it was pretty much a fluke, thank you Jesus! and I pray it is for you as well. Many factors play a part in it, like at the time I was having difficulty with eating. I will say a prayer for you, Malika
