My Hair?
Hi everyone, I have been losing my hair the past 4 months. I wasn't good about taking vit. and protien but Im back on track with all of that. I was feeling so good I didnt think I needed all of the supplements. Oh boy! My hair use to be very thick and now its very thin. Please help and how can I stop my hair from falling out? Thanks so much, Tee
If you've truly gotten back on track with your protein and vitamins, the hair should slowly rebound. A lot of women lose hair after childbirth (sudden hormal changes), but it grows back. There is also a great shampoo called Nioxin (you actually use 2-3 products) which helps with hair loss.
I've used it and it's great. You can find it on the web and at some salons. It might be good to use while you are waiting for your hair to grow back in....
I had my RNY on 12/16/05 and lost some hair about 4 months out. I used Nioxin and it works very well. My hair is definitely back but it's a totally different texture - much coarser now than ever before. However, it could be the gray - ha!
I'm surprised to see that you had your surgery in 2004 and are losing hair at this point. Do you get in your protein?
Take care,
Linda
I was worried about my hair thinning too (used to be VERY thick) and when I went in for my physical last year I talked to my Doc and he told me that it's not uncommon for women in the pre-meno stages (I'm post meno d/t hysterectomy) for their hair to start thinning. This being said it may have nothing to do with your WLS or protein, however it is important that you maintain all your nutrients continually wheter you think you need them any more or not. Check with your Doc if you are still concerned.
The shampoos reccomended above are great and will help prevent any more loss and give you the appearance of more volume.
Hope this helps

First, let me say that you will need to be good about vitamins and protein for LIFE. Your body does not grow back the way it was, even if it does learn to adjust. I drink a minimum of two 30 gram protein shakes each and every day and I do *not* skip my vitamins. For this reason, I have maintained my weight loss and my health is the best it has been in my life.
The only way to stop your hair from falling out is to keep the protein grams going in. It's what goes IN the body, not ON the body that will work for you. All of the expensive shampoos and hair preparations in the world are not going to fix this for you - the only thing you will get is a smaller wallet. Some people swear by their expensive shampoos. However, let me tell you that you might as well save your money.
I have found a wonderful vitamin that has a megadose of Biotin in capsule form. Biotin will strengthen your new hair growth, as well as your fingernails and it will help you synthesize the protein. I take Twinlabs Yeast Fighters and even 3 and a half years out have noticed new strength to my hair and nails.
Good luck and God bless -
And please don't flame this post. Experience is an excellent instructor.
