Food Addictions

Good Evening, Grads, I have been getting this newsletter emailed to me lately, and there have been some interesting articles recently.  Reading so, so, so many recent posts here about  regain and difficulty holding on to our food "sobriety", I thought some of you might get some insight from this and related articles. I have come to accept there are food addictions that I did not acknowledge previously.  I stil crave many foods, and struggle to keep away from certain foods.  I find that if I eat a piece of SF chocolate, one piece is sufficient.  When there were Hershey's kisses on the counter at work, I ate one,.  Guess what, I wanted another, then another.  Because I fear dumping, I stopped eating them, but  the desire to keep eating them was almost overwhelming.  I don't think I would have had the same physiological response to a malitol sweetened chocolate. So, to those of you struggling with your food demons, read some of these articles that discuss food addictions and some strategies for dealing with them.  These articles are not written for the WLS patient, but to the general population.  Food addiction is food addiction, no matter who you are. http://www.prevention.com/article/0,5778,s1-4-64-185-6786-2,00.html Debra M.

Thanks, that was a good article.  I also have trouble with grazing, snacking or whatever you want to call it.  I am in the process of finding my root problem, so the article was good to see. Darlene

Thank you for posting the link.  It is exactly what I came to this board looking for!  I am pre-op and I think I am addicted to food.  I think I have issues that surgery won't fix by itself.    Thanks again!

The golden time after surgery MAKES you look at these issues and where and what you can do to stop the addiction, kind of like a lock down rehab, you either will find some other way to comfort yourself and move along or seek something to help you cope (unfortunately  some people make REALLY bad choices) and we are not talking food choices.  This was one thing that I think no one can really understand pre surgery, I think you can grasp the concept of course, but the reality is hard to swallow no pun intended.  I realize now how much time I spent planning making and eating food, presenting it to others and comforting myself numb with food, lets all face it like drugs or alcohol SP. this works , and its a difficult thing to give up, the time immediately after surgery is rife with feeling of loss (not weight) and a confusion about exactly how important food is in life.  Socializing can be uncomfortable, and you really start noticing people around you who dont eat everything on their plate and those who continue their giant CLAIM JUMPER meal way past the 3000 calorie mark (I think thats about 1/3 of a portion there)  One look at the plates passing and I said "ICED TEA PLEASE"  But pre surgery I would be sooooooooooo   happy to eat there , almost like a buffet.   Like I have said many time no matter how much I was on here and learned about the surgery from other places there are just some things you CANNOT be prepared for in any real way.    BUT the surgery does give your brain a chance to "fix" .  It's another one of those things you are either determined or damned, there have to be major issues faced for all of us .  I hope you find the answers that will give you peace of mind pre-surgery.  Best of luck   peacemunkey
