One a day Diet Pepsi

I'm currently 2 1/2 years out from WLS (lost 140) and have regained 10 lbs. I'm working on getting back on track but was wondering about diet pop. I know we should not drink it because it can cause regain, but I only allow my self one can per day. I also drink 4 protein drinks per day, plus over 64 oz of water (mixed with Crystal lite) per day  so I do get my water and protein in every day. And my vitamins. So is one diet pepsi per day all that bad? If I was drinking can after can per day I would say yes that is bad. Just wondering. Thanks in advance for your responses. Maria

Hi Maria! I don't think 1 diet pepsi a day is bad as long as you don't notice any adverse effects from drinking it. For me, diet soda causes BAD cravings, LOL, I mean for bad things! So I just can't get back into that habit for obvious reasons. If you don't experience anything like that then I think you can enjoy it in moderation without a problem!

Hi Maria, You didn't say if your diet pop was decaf or not. I was told that for every ounce of caffinated drink I have, I'm to drink 2 ounces of water (in addition to the 64 oz) to make up for the effects caffiene can have. Caffiene is a stimulant and can stimulate your appetite. It also dehydrates you.  I limit myself to 1 diet root bear or diet lemonaide (both naturally decaf) a day but I drink AchievOne protein drinks..and they do have caffiene. Occationally, I also drink sf green tea...also, it has caffiene (they make it decaf but I haven't been able to find it at our local grocery). So...I drink closer to 128 oz of water a day. Sherri ps...I've heard horror stories of the carbonation expanding the pouch like a balloon. I haven't personally had any ill effects from it. My surgeon does recommend waiting until you are 6-12 months post-op...I waited 18 months.

You have to remember that not all surgeons forbid soda.  My, you like those capital letters...

My apologies as well, as I was being a bit tongue-in-cheek about the capital letters (although it was coming across a bit forceful, in my own opinion). The only other reason I can think that she thinks drinking soda might be bad for you is that the majority of people here seem to think so.  My surgeon says no, so I don't drink it, but I know the thinking on that has relaxed in the last years.

And, by the way, it is important that you do what you feel when writing your posts, not what you feel I think is acceptable.

I've heard that even diet soda leads to snacking - its also not good for your teeth (my dentist said there's some kind of acid even in diet soda that's just awful for teeth) so it just seems like something that's easy to avoid.  And I never did the protein drinks, but 4 a day?  Aren't there a lot of calories in those?  You might be able to cut some calories there too maybe?  Just a thought... Good luck!

my mom is 6 years out and drinks diet pepsi like water. She has also gained back about 40 pounds - alot in her 5'0 frame. She eats alot of things she shouldn't, and it all started with the pepsi. She says that she uses alot of ice to water it down, and waits a few minutes before drinking it, but I have seen otherwise. I will eventually try it, but I don't think I will enjoy it as much as I think I will.
