30 grams of protein?

Hello everyone. I have a question regarding the amount of protein we should take in at any one time. I was told our bodies cannot process more than 30 grams at a time, but I have seen replies to postings saying some of you are taking in 60 or more grams in one shake. Can someone please clarify this for me. Thanks and have a wondeful day.

I think the scientific community believes that the liver cannot process more than 20-30 grams of protein in any 2-3 hour period, but don't know of any precise studies. It makes sense, though. Processing protein is hard work for the liver, because it has to break it down. I don't think the numbers are precise, but getting much more than 30 grams at a time is probably just wasting money. It's probably just being flushed out. When I drink my 42 grams/protein "New Whey" bullets, I drink half and then wait a bit. Don't know if that helps, but..... It's probably much better to get the protein in over the course of the entire day, if you can.

Thanks so much for your reply. I too use the New Whey "bullets" in the same manner - about half at a time. I will coninut taking my 30 gram, 4oz. shakes as needed. I just wanted to know if some new information had been determined in regards to our ability to suddenly process more than 30 grams at a time. Thanks for the confirmation.

Pam, I have consulted with 2 different nutrionist reference to how much protein we can process since I could not find any scientific reports online in ref to this...both told me the same thing, there is no reason to believe our bodies can't process 60 grams of protein over 30 minutes which is how long it takes me to finish my Lo Carb Slimfast (concentrated protein) with Unflavored Unjury (whey protein isolate) added which equals 60 grams so I assume you are referring to me since I recently posted this. I am at goal over 9 months weighing 126 today (I flucuate 3-5 lbs), am 2 yrs out as of Feb 8th. So I guess what I am doing works for me and I am sure both nutrionist know what they are talking about. Unjury is not cheap, if it wasn't working I would not be spending the money, I would be buying a handbag.

Here is a place for you to get some basic information about protein. http://www.vitalady.com/why_protein.htm Vitalady is an 11 year post-op and very versed in what works for us. Sandy

I am a scientist by background, and this is a question that has been haunting me. I want to see verifiable research papers about protein absorption in the gastric bypass patient. All I have read so far has been "my nutritionist says" anwers. It is just like different surgeons, each one has their own protocol based on what works for them. I haven't seen anyone site a research paper on this topic. AND, if I'm not absorbing all of the protein I'm drinking at one time, I want to know for sure if I am just excreting the excess, or do I need to be concerned with the excess protein calories causing me to gain weight. I am one of those who does consume a double scoop of protein powder every morning, and sometimes late in the evening. As for anecdotal evidence, so far it seems to be working for me, I have surpassed my goal, and have lost almost 210 pounds, to now have a normal BMI. I feel very healthy, so, am I absorbing all that protein, or wasting it? I do eat protein from food sources at each meal, too, and don't rely on the supplements as my only source of protein. Any other scientists out there that have the proof for me? Debra M.

Debra, After I posted my reply to this post I made a few phone calls, one particulary to my bariatric surgeons group whom is a professor teaching bariatrics and again I got the same answer, there is "no" scientific evidence we do not absorb it all. I was asked me how I felt and where was I as far as goal...well I surpassed my surgeons goal and am holding within the 3-5 up and down pounds. I told them what was being talked about here and my labs from Jan were pulled whi*****luded protein. I was told me whatever I was doing to continue because it is working for me. I am drinking (11 oz of Lo Carb Slimfast with 2 scoops unflavored Unjury) 60 grams over 40-60 minutes while taking my vitamins. After I drink my shake I get on pilates for 23 minutes. Debra if you do find any scientfic info regarding this please email me. I have been researching this over 2 yrs.

Thanks, Mirabelle, for your post.  I will keep looking, like I said, this is an issue that intrigues my questioning scientific nature.  On the funny side, I had decided that no matter what the answer was to this question, I would keep doing what I'm doing.  First, it seems to be working for me, and secondly, I really like my protein.  I drink two scoops of IDS Belgian chocolate with extra added cocoa powder as hot chocolate every morning.  It is relaxing to me and I have fun adding different flavored syrups to it.  Here it is late evening, and I ate a very early supper tonight, around 4:30, so I'm drinking some more hot chocolate protein before I go to bed. I will ask my surgeon the next time I see him if he knows of any papers on this subject. Debra M.

I love a good cup of hot chocolate myself.  Can you tell me where to purchase IDS products and is the cocoa powder you are adding regular cocoa powder?

Thanks!

Hi Anjanette, I buy my IDS powder from bariatriceating.com.  Usual blah blah here, not affilitated with them, just a satisfied customer.  I don't think the IDS is important, other chocolate protein powders will probably work just as well.  I just like the fact that IDS has added vitamins.  I think vitalady.com also carries it, and probably other good WLS friendly sources, too.  They are cheaper than the IDS website, lol. I use Ghiradelli unsweetened baking cocoa or Nestle's Dark Dutch processed cocoa, when I can find it.  I've gotten picky about it, and often mix the two cocoas together to get a richer taste.  I found it works the best when I sift the cocoa into the protein powder, to help avoid any little "cocoa lumps". I use about 1 tablespoon of cocoa per scoop of protein.  This adds about 15-20 extra calories to the protein, but no sugar.  It is so much fun to play with the different SF syrups, which I also buy from bariatriceating.com.  You can get them directly from DaVinci's website, but, once again, bariatriceating is cheaper than the company's website. I have found Ghiradelli at Kroger occasionally, and Whole Foods and Hillers carry it. Have fun with it, Debra M.
