I have seen a lot of post saying that to take off the weight after someone has been post op for awhile is to go back to taking in a lot of protein. Is that the case? I have even been given the Plateau Diet that you do for 10 days. Does this really work?

Here is what i was given, hope it helps. Im going to give it a shot. *** 1. Do this for 10 days to break a plateau. 2. Drink 2 litres of water a day. 3. You must have 45 grams of protein supplement and all your vitamins/minerals supplements each day (some suggest at least 60 and up to 80 gr). 4. You may consume up to 3 oz of the following high protein foods, 5x a day. Beef Pork Chicken Turkey Lamb Fish Eggs Low-fat Cheese Cottage Cheese Plain Yogurt or Artificially Sweetened Peanut Butter Beans / Legumes You may also have: Sugar-Free Popsicles Tea or Coffee (decaf only) Sugar Free Jello Broths / Boullion Crystal Light Drinks 5. If it's not on the list, you can't have it for 10 days!!!! 6. Keep a food diary and try to get up to 30 mins of exercise daily

Hey Priscilla! I'm over 5 years post (9/6/01) and have run the gamut on weight loss: lost too much, worked to re-gain, did that really well & re-gained too much then re-lost, now maintained over 2.5 years... Before taking on a "prescription" of "how to lose weight", I'd have to take a close look at what I'm currently doing... What are habits that have been established? Good & bad ones? For me I worked hard to regain (after discussing w/ my nutritionist) by 1st: DRINKING WITH MY MEALS . Added more volume (also adding more complex carbs: multi grain breads crackers & lo-fat cheese) to daily meals & regained well! When I realized I had gone from 2/4 back up to a 14/16 (5' 7" -Started 292 to 129 to 179 to 159 & holding...) I put the BRAKES on & looked at what I was really doing. I had to break the habit (again!) of DRINKING WITH MY MEALS and put LIMITS on those wonderful CARBS and increased my MOVEMENT (purposeful Movement: walking, biking, working in the garden, parking farther out in lot, etc..) For me, it wasn't about doing another "diet" or fasting or anything more than EVALUATING what I was habitually doing and making the tweaks... How awesome that (for me) the TOOL WORKS when I work the tool !! Might be something to consider! You can do this!

I think the Plateau diet is a great short-term fix. I think you need to figure out what you're doing now that is different from what you were doing when you were maintaining/losing. For me, it was all a slippery slope... and not setting "OMG Limits." I think once you find a weight you're happy at.. you need to have an emergency plan/action plan for when you're 5 pounds (or whatever) over. And stick to it. So, I think if you did a plateau diet at that point, you'd be fine. You'd be back on track. If you've let things slide a bit more... gotten back into old habits a bit more, I think you need to do a bit more to get back on track. I'm a fan of Weigh****chers for long-term post-ops.. because I think it gives one the accountability we need... as well as allows for a realistic diet (anything...as long as you count it.) But that's just me. ~ Karla
