Hi Linn, Hey, I had my surgery 12/1/04! I've gained about 9 lbs. from my lowest. I put this weight on after starting my kitchen job last May. I did really well when I was walking a couple miles a day. I'm still in my size 12's and really want to stay there! My boss keeps having me taste the food before we send it out to the senior citizen centers! I blame her for the gain, of course!! Hang in there! Best, Janice W.

Hi, Lin. I'm doing a modified Atkins, too. Just started a little over a week ago, and lost 8 pounds. So I'm pretty happy to have found a way to get my re-gained weight down. I had gained almost 30 from my lowest post-WLS weight. I don't care if I lose all 30, but 15-20 would be real nice. My modification is allowing myself a "cheat" day when I eat whatever I want without guilt. The rest of the week is all protein and veggies. I decided to do this on the advice of a co-worker/friend who lost almost 100 pounds (non-WLS) doing this. He has maintained the loss for a number of years, too, so that says something to me. Anyway, continued good luck to you. Hang tough, and you will make it! Carlita

Hi, Beth. Atkins is a difficult diet to get started one. The first few days can be pretty terrible - headaches, fuzzy feeling, tiredness, and that's all because your body is detoxing from sugar and carbs. Once you're through that, generally in 3 days or so, it's much better. I basically eat anything that is allowed on Atkins induction plan. YOu can find this on the Atkins website. But the basic rules are no bread, potatoes, milk, sugar, junk food like chips or pretzels. I eat protein and veggies, basically. YOu can also have 3 cups of veggies per day, although I don't measure that, so I probably get more than that. Also, they recommend using oil & vinegar for salads, but I use a low-carb ranch. It's not that difficult to follow, because you are limited in your choices. Certain protein foods should be avoided, like processed lunch meats and hot dogs, stuff like that. My modification is that I'm allowing myself a "cheat" day once a week, and on that day I will eat whatever I feel like having. I think it helps me get through and not be so bored. I do love food and always will, and I honestly can't see myself giving up all of my favorite foods forever. Once I lose the weight I may change that to 2 days a week - anyway I'll figure that out when I get there. I'll probably have to experiment to keep things balanced out. My daily menu is something like this: B-Scrambled egg, cooked in butter 2 slices bacon Snack-Cottage cheese or cheese stick, or turkey breast L-Salad with cooked chicken, ranch dressing Sugar free jello Snack-protein bar, or protein shake D-Cooked protein, veggies or salad Snack-another sf jello, or a protein snack bar I hope this helps, Beth. Good luck getting back on track. Carlita

Hi Carlita, Thanks for your reply. Yes Atkins does work. It's bad for me cause, I don't like meat very much, but it's really what I should have been doing all along. I'm a diabetic so I have too watch those sweets. I can't eat a banana my sugar will go to 500! I love fruit!! The best thing I did was the surgery. I was taking 2 shots a day and pills. Now I only take 1 pill and that's if I have too many carbs. Good luck to you keep up the good work. This for our life!! Lin***

Adkins of course does work  One Time........... what happens is you can trick your body ONCE thereafter you really will get the MOST out of carbs it will not be starved in the same way again (the body)   it's great that its working for you though be careful it's very hard on the kidneys and being a former diabetic we are already compromised .Pre surgery I took a minimum of 4 shots of  INsulin both Lantus and Humalog , my first labs indicated my A1c was 4.9, I have had absolutely no recurrence of it.  That was the main reason for me for surgery, I weighed 287 on surgery day and now am 130-135  sometimes less when I check though I really never have been a slave to the scale the numbers never interested me , and I never had a goal other than to improve my health .  Talk about body dysmorphia I though (no Knew) I was a sexy big girl and never had self esteem issues.  Excercise in an organized way I cant stomach either............but cleaning horse pens, or walking with a friend talking etc. seems more like there is something happening other than stupid excercising.  To me it is mindless and though I have tried it always sucked.   Good luck and I am glad your diabetes is much more in control.  Life is good
