Breast surgery part II over with
Had my re-excision lumpectomy for breast cancer yesterday. Everything went smoothly and easily. Surgery was supposed to be at 1:45. Think I was getting wheeled back around 2:10 and I hit recovery at 3:00 and was home a little after 4:00. They used a deep IV sedation so no general anesthia to deal with.
I was definintely sore last night and took my drugs (percoset) and that helped. But more than the breast pain I've had a nasty headache. Still had it this morning but it has eased right now. I've only taken tylenol today.
I didn't see the surgeon after surgery but Rich said she said all went well. She cleaned out the fluid buildup in there in addition to removing the tissue that we hope gets clean margins on the cancer. My breast had actually gotten bigger in the past week with fluid 4 weeks after the original surgery. Hopefully we won't have more fluid to drain later but you gotta do what you gotta do. Since I had hematomas in there from the biopsies in early December and fluid from the first surgery in late December... I assume this time I'll have issues too.
Now I wait. Again. I won't get the pathology bac****il Thursday next week at my post-op appointment. The two things are: 1) hoping no more invasive cancer is found and 2) hoping the surgical margins are clear. If the margins aren't clear again, I'm going to go for a mastectomy. I won't go through this a third time. Decision is made and surgeon already knows. She agrees but then again I could have opted for that all along - it is always OUR decision as women as to what we want.
Take care, all! Back to rest...
Kathy
Kathy,
I'm glad you came through the procedure with little complications. I'll be praying that you get good news when you get your pathology report. I'm sure that having already made a decision about what you'll do if the margins aren't clear has lifted an enormous burden from your shoulders. So, sit back, rest and take it easy. There is nothing you can do now except pray - and I'm helping you there! Good luck and keep us posted on your progress.
Gentle hugs (cause I know you're sore)!

Kathy,
Praying you get good news back from the pathologist.
Good to know you're set with a forward plan no matter the outcome.
I have 2 co-workers (faculty) who went through the same series of events.
Both of them are 3 to 5 years past it now.
One had extensive lumpectomy and the other had that first and then on to full mastectomy. They are both in the clear now with excellent follow-up exams and
The one who is five years out this summer is having both her breasts done by the same plastic surgeon who did my panneculectomy.
The other is looking into having a breast reduction / "balance adjustment" as well.
There is a bit of an outbreak of PS running through my associates after I opened the door.
Sharing this babble with you as a way of passing on, If does end up working out fine.
Praying and Hoping that you get to "Fine" soon!!!
Get your rest!!
Best Wishes-
Dx
Hi Kathy,
I had a mastectomy on January 6th 2006. Because of my weight loss and tiny remaining breasts, ( tumor was 3 centimeters with 2 centimeters metastisized around it.) I was given no choice. At this point even though I have just had recontructive surgery and augmentation in the other breast I almost wish I would have opted to have both sides done. It would have been less stress when they call you back to have additional mammogram pics.
Any way hope all goes well for you. This breast cancer is certainly a stressful thing. I will be praying for you.
Are you having chemo and radiation? I'd love to be a support. If you need me I'm here.
