soup??
Now I'm cold all the time and love soup, mostly bean/chili types or broth. Why do I hear all the time about avoiding soup. I still think its warming and filling and I don't do the creamy fatty ones. Also using high density protein as well.
Am I wrong? Feedback please!! And thanks (again) for your help.
Carol
It sounds like you're doing the right kinds of soup. I have never been told not to do soup, but just to make sure it's higher in protein and chili is a staple for alot of wls patients. I think its the soups with mostly water, high fat, high carb, low protein that will just wash thru quickly and not fill you up that you want to avoid. This time of year in PA we need some good, warm foods!!!!!!

I do soup all the time. My favorite is this one and couldn't be easier.
1/2 half a bag of dried pinto beans, washed and all
1 frozen cornish hen
Salt
Pepper
And, I add Tony Cacherre's (poultry seasoning or just nothing else would work too)
Cook all day!
What happens is that the frozen bird slowly cooks, adds a ton of flavor, and gets really stringy. After the beans are done you have to lift the hen carfully out and remove the skin and bone.
When I was a kid in Mississippi, we would eat stuff like this cooked with Fatback and cornbread. So, I had to make up some way to eat the stuff I was used to eating. This makes way too much for me to eat in one week so I end up freezing part of it and reheating it in a couple of months.

My concern with soup is two-fold: 1) it's a liquid that I'm consuming with my meal and 2) not enough protein.
To address that, I try to get the thicker soups like bean, lentil, etc. And then I go to the deli and get a 1/2" thick slice of smoked turkey. I'll add about 2 to 3 oz to the soup and that helps with the protein--and reduces the liquid to solid ratio.
Hope that helps,
Sally
Carol,
You're on the right track. I eat alot of homemade chicken soup, chili, bean soups. I just make sure the protein content is high. I make my chili with 99%fat free ground chicken breast with two cans of beans. I try to keep the sodium low. I also use 96% extra lean ground beef. I make my chicken soup with chicken breast and some type of beans, I also include cabbage, carrots, onion, celery (veggies with low calories). I use reduced sodium broths as well.
I have not gained one pound and am three years post op. Labs are good also. So I say Enjoy your soup!!
Best wishes,

Hi Carol....
Here's a post from the CA board that I just posted over there. It's Taco Soup, done in the crock pot and couldn't be easier! My son and I just love it!!!

Carol....soup is one of my staples of foods that I eat. Love the stuff. Especially chili. I think some people find the canned stuff not so good for you because of the high sodium content....but that has not bothered me. I don't eat a normal serving of can soups to really have much water retention. LOL. I had this chicken tortilla soup the other day....chicken was so tender and it just had a good taste. I like good tasting foods.

Hi CarolDe, i also do soups often. I have never had any problems. I dont like bean soups but do alot of chicken veggie soups. I think anything in moderation is fine...At this point we can pretty much figure out what is working for us and what is not. For some soup may not be filling enough and others may be just perfect. Good luck...
