Questions Regarding a Previous Post

I just had my one year with my surgeon last month, and luckily all is well. When I asked him if I needed to "look out" for any further complications and/or anything special to WLS folks, he basically stated I was outta the woods. Is this not necessarily so? In an earlier post, from yesterday I believe, there was some discussion about conditions/issues that "might" occur as we are further along. I am very pleased about my surgery and wouldn't change a thing. I would just like to keep a watchful eye and educate myself in regards to any potential bumps in the road. Shee****hought I did all my homework..... Thanks for any insight! Maria W.

The only thing my surgeon said was a long term issue was the increased likelihood of a bowel obstruction since they did the re-routing! And of course, kidney stones can form due to the calcuim, and gall stones can form because of the dietary changes. Of course those who didn't have wls can still get kidney and gall stones. And bowel obstructions for that matter. But otherwise, after six months, the other typical complication risks are mostly gone. Sally

Maria, I think that after a certain point, we are out of the woods from complications resulting from the surgery, but the biggest pitfall in my mind is the complacency that can sometimes creep in. This is especially true with vitamins and the need for attentiveness in that regard. Problems in that area can creep up slowly over time and regular lab work to monitor various levels is critical. Maria, I think those with WLS will always have to be on the lookout for things like nutritional deficiencies, bone density loss, etc. Also, complications related to abdominal surgery, like a weird hernia I had two years after my WLS (the intestines bulging thru their covering, called the mesentary) and bowel obstruction, will always be a possibility. Just so you know.....those are my thoughts. Good luck. Marilyn
