After one year, I asked the surgeon, and he said I could go to regular pill vitamins and calcium and try them out. All this time I've been with my chewables but wanted pills for convenience with other meds. Who else takes pills? How are your labs? Any problems? Thanks for your help, Carol

I use Optisource vitamins from Walgreens. They are chewable and specially formulated for WLS patients. The flavor isn't too bad. I take 2 at a time. As for calcium, be sure it's calcium citrate. Calcium needs acid to be absorbed in the intestines. Calcium carbonate isn't as readily absorbed in patients who have had RNY. Also, I just found out after 2.5 years, that you need 1500 mg of elemental calcium a day. So 500mg of calcium citrate is really only 200 mg of elemental calcium. I use a liquid calcium, Blue Bonnet, and a Twin Labs chewable calcium when I'm not home. Guess I need to really up it tho since I have continued bone loss and elevated PTH. Otherwise, my labs are good.

I take a vitamin pack that my surgeon's office provides. It is formulated for our special needs with the dosing and it contains: 4 multivitamins, 3 calcium chewables, and iron pill and a B-12 sublingual. I take these every day, I am 2 years out and I have beautiful bloodwork! I find that the cost is extremely reasonable @ $43.00 for a two month supply. Hope that helps! -- Meryl
