Because the caffeine in regular coffee and tea is a diuretic... which works against the need to drink lots of water and liquids. Carol

Check with your surgeon, but my doc only said no caffeine for the first 3 months. I was counting down the days until my three months were up so I could resume regular coffee and tea. Decaf sucks! Just be sure to get in enough plain water throughout that you and you should not hae any problems with regular coffee or tea.

Dana, caffiene is a diuretic and can also leach calcium from your body. I do occassionally drink caffiene but have gotten use to decaf for the most part and I'm a big coffee drinker . If you do drink caffiene be sure to drink extra water. Too much caffiene makes me nauseated. Dana

After 3 months I went back to caffeine. I am 2.5 years out from RNY and gained 20 pounds in 9 months. My WLS dietician said anyone 2 years out gaining weight should stop caffeine. So I did, with some other changes. I quit gaining and really have to work at losing again. So, there is my answer. I had headaches at first when I went without my am coffee, but replaced it with a decaf mocha protein drink, and I look and feel better.
