it was a short "honeymoon"

Did anyone have a really short honeymoon. I had my surgery 7/7/06,dropped 55 pounds fairly easy and now have to really focus on my eating. I knew at some point this would come I just didn't expect it so soon.now it seems i have to battle for every pound sometimes just to keep the pounds off. I have practically none of the sensitivities to sugar and carbs I thought I would. I know it's supposed to vary from person to person but I hardly have any sensitivities to any kind of food. I was hoping the surgery would create a sort of negative re-enforcement type thing. I'm sure the possibility of vomiting and feeling sick keeps a lot of people from even trying foods they used to eat in the quantities they did before the surgery. I have none of that. Also, I don't feel "uncomfortable" very quick during eating. It's like I'm in the maintenance phase of this way to early. I guess I must be one of those people with a short "honeymoon". Let the real work begin. Anyone who will share any thoughts is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I had surgery 3/11/2005. I never had a quick lose phase. Every pound was slow to come off, but they did come off. It has taken me 21 months to lose 110 pounds. I am 61 years old and some people have said my age is the cause for the slow losing. Also, I weighed 242 at surgery--this is considered a light weight in the WLS circle. Maybe that is why it was slow. BUT IT HAS COME OFF--BE PATIENT AND WORK THE PROGRAM. In time you will look back and realize the pounds have slipped away. I weigh every day on a digital scale and write it down on a calendar. That way I can look back and see where I have come from. My heart goes out to you. I have been there and done that. I lived in fear that it would not work for me, but it did.

I think alot of it depends on what you put into your mouth. My first priority is Protein, water, veggies THEN the carbs.....I have not experimented with sugar...afraid that if I do I will be defeating the purpose of this surgery. I do know that if I eat too many grapes ( sugar) I will "mini dump"...I get so tired that I can't keep my eyes open. As far as you stating "I'm sure the possibility of vomiting and feeling sick keeps a lot of people from even trying foods they used to eat in the quantities they did before the surgery. I have none of that. Also, I don't feel "uncomfortable" very quick during eating." That may be your problem...you should be eating slowly and only what you can "comfortably" take in for about 20 minutes ( I believe) I found this on another site you may want to take a look at ..http://www.thinnertimesforum.com/showthread.php?t=2739&highlight=weight+loss+dummies I found that if I drink alot of water it helps with the "cravings". Remember this is a TOOL , it will only work if you use it the right way. Just my opinion Sandy

I've always had to watch what I put in my mouth. I PCOS and carbs make me gain or not loose no matter if I had the surgery or not. Generally this so called honeymoon period is the the first 4 to 6 months. I lost my first 60 pounds rather easily (First 3 months). Everything else was work. People who say this surgery is the "Easy way out" can kiss my Sharpie-looking butt! Your still gonna loose, it's slower but the weight will come off as long as you stick to your diet and exercise plan and get your daily fluids and protein. After the first 3 months, I lost between 8-10 pounds a month unitl I was a 13 months out. Then it was work to loose or keep off. Im sensitive to carbs, I know that and if I eat a ton of them and gain, It's my own fault.

thanks so much for the advice and the info. on the pouch rules, that was very helpful. i will work harder to live the lifestyle i need to make this successful. i think my expectations may have been a little skewed. on the other hand *****ally knows how they will respond to wls. we still have to deal with the demons that got us overweight to begin with. i knew they wouldn't go away but really didn't know how i would deal with them. now i know i will have to deal with my weaknesses even early into this change . god help me.

I lost easily for the first 6 months then it slowed down until 9 months then from 9-12 months I only lost 1-2 lbs a month. In total I lost 115lbs in a year. Now my main concern is maintaing my weight loss and not to gain a pound. My surgeon also does not want me to lose any more weight either. I do have the sensitivities to sugar and high fat foods which help me stay away from those types of food that got me fat to begin with. I found out that I need to exercise which will help you lose weight as well. I f you find your self going to foods that you shouldn't be eating then maybe continue to see a nut. or a counsler. I put myself through a lot for having this surgery I am determined not to be a failure of WLS. Keep positive thoughts and why you had this surgery to begin with. Try to keep all junk food out of the house which helps and stock up on healthy food and snacks. Good luck and I am sure you will do fine!

I had a short honeymoon also. I have my surgery 9/17/03ds a month the first 6 months and then 9 fr 2 months then 6 for 3 months and then nothing for 2...I exercised and dieted everyday the first year and on 9/17/04 I lost a total of 139 pounds. Great in general but not great in WLS world. I have always been able to eat any & everything. on 9/17/06 (3 years out) I weighed 205. a loss of 155 pounds. I still diet everyday and for the last 3 months am working out daily again. I will give you this much hope...after WLS i can only force (yes force..im sick) 6 cookies...not an entire bag. and even though I still exercise and am on a daily diet I know I never would have been able to mainatin a 160 pound weight loss without this surgery. Dont give in....for some of us life is just harder!!!! Best of luck Diana RNY 9/17/03 360/200/still aiming at 180
