Don't forget your mammogram this year
Hi all, It's been a while since I posted. Just wanted to remind you all to get your yearly mammogram. It's been a year since I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I am doing great but just want everyone take care of themselves and get checked! I know this is not a pleasant thing but it could save your life!
Actually, mine is tomorrow morning. Then I see a breast surgeon to review it a few weeks later. My sister was diagnosed earlier this year so I go to a surgeon to have mine reviewed now.
My sister was getting mammograms every 6 months for about a year and a half. They were "watching" something. We had no family history of breast cancer to speak of. They were going to wait another 6 months and look again when she spoke up and said "I feel a rough edge there... can't we biopsy this and be done with it?" They said okay and sure enough cancer. It had spread to one lymph node. Had they biopsied it a year and a half earlier maybe it wouldn't have.
So, in light of my sister's cir****tance....all I can say is if the docs are watching something or if you feel something... insist on having a biopsy. It is your right. I'm glad my sister did. She decided on a bilateral mastectomy (both sides) with reconstructive surgery. The second breast did not have cancer but had dysplasia (abnormal cells) so it was good she decided to do both. She is doing very well. Finished chemo in July.
I hope you are in great health, Kaye!
Be empowered ladies.

I can't agree with you more about the biopsy!!!!!!!! I was told that there was a 99.9% chance that the lump I found was not cancer and that I should wait 6 months and then have another mammo to see if there were any changes. I opted to have the biopsy anyway and it was cancer and in 2 lypmh node. I agree always have a biopsy.
Good luck on your mammo today!
Well, looks like a biopsy is in my future. My mammogram was deemed abnormal. I see the breast surgeon next Thursday to see what she wants to do... needle biopsy or otherwise. I was supposed to see her to review my films in 3-4 weeks. Obviously that has changed so they moved the appointment up. Didn't like the radiologists' "Ummm, they'll probably want to see you much sooner than that".
