Advil or Tylenol????

When I had surgery, the doctor said that I shouldn't take Advil (Ibuprophen). He said that I could take Tylenol. That's what I've done for the last 18 months. I have arthritis in my fingers and my GP told me to take Advil. I explained that I'm not supposed to. Does anyone know if taking ibuprophen is a "forever" thing or was just supposed to be in the early stages after surgery? I will call my surgeon next week, but my fingers really hurt and the tylenol isn't helping.

I would call your WLS surgeon and explain to him what you DP told you to take.See if he agrees or maybe can give you something else.

You know what, don't take the advil. I'll tell you why. I also suffer from arthritis in my hands and I also tore my ALS (Knee ligament) last year. I was taking tylenol too and my Ortho doc put me on advil told me to take it with food and an antacid as a percaution. Guess what? I ended up with three ulcers in my pouch which have plagued me ever since. The pain from that was worse than my hands or knees, so not worth it! So now I take Tylenol Arthritis and Bromelain (Which is a natural anti-inflammatory derived from pineapple enzymes). Since taking the bromelain for the last 3 weeks, my knee and hands have not hurt once. Just check with your doc first to make sure it's ok to take it. Jane

I was told by my surgeon that the only pain releiver I could take without a perscripition is tylenol because of possible ulcers. I would call your surgeon and mybe there could be another alternative. Hope you feel better soon.

I'm 3.5 years out, and just getting over terrible ulcer (4 pints of blood) simply from taking NSAIDs (Ibuprofen), and BC powders. Don't think I want to ever see another Ibuprofen again. Did not take them often, just every now and then to prevent a migraine headache. I am so sorry about the pain, just talk to a bariatric doc (or your WLS surgeon) and see what he says can help you.

My surgeon is one of those that allows advil for post ops. Many surgeons say no to Nsaids forever but some patients have conditions that require the anti inflammatory properties of Nsaids and have to take them. My surgeon has allowed Tylenol for me after 3 months post op. (I'm 5 years out), and ONLY on a full stomach and for short periods of time. (toothache, cramps, muscle strains etc.) The new liquigels are being ok'd by many more surgeons for post op patients as the risk of ulcers isn't as great with the gel formula. Check with your surgeon, you may be ok to take the liquigels when you need the relief of Advil for your arthirits pain. I've taken Advil off and on for 5 years since my surgery and as long as I follow the rules I don't have any problems.

I totally agree with My Jane on this one . I too now suffer from Ulcers .. not 100 % of it was from Nsaids , but I did take them when dealing with my tumor pain ... and now that I take hydrocortisone for life , it has eaten a whole in my pouch that hurts worse than anything . I can not eat and am now on my way to see a doc about it all .. I can not deal with it any more . The meds they gave me Calfate and Nexium are not working . I would suggest to stay on the tylenol .. they do have liquid forms , and I take those instead now . Best wishes to you . Natalie

I don't think we're supposed to take Advil ever, but I have taken it on a few occasions, only short-term, to relieve back and/or neck pain. Tylenol does nothing for me when I have that kind of pain. I only take it on a full stomach, and only as long as absolutely necessary. I would check with your doc, and see if there is some way to counteract the ill effects of the ibuprofen. Maybe your surgeon would allow it if you're also taking Prilosec or another type of anti-ulcer medication. Good luck. Carlita
