42 grams of protein in a tube
Hey everyone - I thought I would share this from the Tx OH Board - not sure how good they are but 42 grams in a few sips is for me! If anyone has tried them I would love to hear your thoughts!

Those test tube thingys for protein.....usually 25 grams...now come in 42 grams..close to the same price....they will have them soon at the Vitamin Shoppe
I know folks that love 'em.
The nutritionist from our hospital said one of their patients used these exclusively for their supplemental protein and their protein levels were not good on their labs. Now, that is only 1 person so not truly a good scientific study. All and all, it would be better to use these and whey protein shakes together. Vary things that way you are sure you are getting extra protein. Counting on the one exclusively isn't probably a good thing in this case.
The protein in the vials says "whey" on it but it is a mix of hydrolyzed collagen protein and whey not pure whey. Here are the ingredients from the label (BTW this is the same label info as the Profect vials - I suspect they are made by the same company and labeled with two brand names with different flavors):
Ingredients: 67.4% Pure deionized water, 31.5% Actinase (patent pending blend of enzymatically hydrolyzed [predigested] collagenic protein isolate, whey protein isolate and casein protein isolate), less tha 2.0% of malic acid, Vitamins (ascorbic acid, niacin, pantothenic acid, pyridoxine, riboflavin, thiamin, folic acid, biotin and cobalamin), natural flavors, acesulfame potassium, sucralose, blue 1 and red 40.
Here is the skinny on hydrolyzed collagen protein:
As a general protein source, HCP is not generally considered a good source of "high-quality" protein like you would find in meat, poultry, fish and in protein powders comprised of soy, egg or milk/whey proteins. On the one hand, HCP is a "poor" protein source because it is low in the sulfur containing amino acids such as cystine (cysteine) and methionine. On the other hand, however, HCP is the richest dietary source of the primary amino acids that make up the collagen molecule - glycine, proline, hydroxyproline, lysine and hydroxylysine. As a concentrated source of these collagen amino acids, HCP is thought to help nourish the collagen-containing tissues throughout the body - tissues such as cartilage, bones, tendons, ligaments and skin.
Now it could be that adding some whey into this product makes it a complete protein by providing the missing amino acids but I just don't know. Not sure how much of it is collagen and how much is whey.
There is also a debate of sorts is that folks absorb about 30 grams of protein at one time... so not sure if 42 is overkill. There todo over this figure but I use it when determining the size of my protein shake to ingest at one sitting.
Kathy (who obviously reads too much about proteins)
Thirty grams is just what they *think* is a reasonable amount we might absorb in one meal.....there actually are no studies out there proving it one way or another that I've found. I asked the Nut at one of my surgeon's office who has been looking for studies - she even contacted the Beef industry to see if there were studies in the general population. Nada. (BTW - if anyone does know of actual clinical research, and can provide a link to such, please email me - this is something I've been researching as well. )
I'd be more concerned about whether or not it's a complete protein than whether it's too much protein. I think you may be right - that they are adding the whey to make it complete.

BT,
If I ever mention the 30 grams... I always say there is a "debate" on it. LOL! You are right, I've not seen any studies. I know that Michelle (vitalady) has talked to the protein manufacturers and that is a figure that is batted around but who is to truly know without studies if they can even be done, ya know? I wonder how that would be measured.
The way I look at it... 30 grams is a figure... a baseline. I figure it does no harm using that number for my own protein intake. If I had something 42 grams... I'd drink half now and half a few hours from now. I'd rather not ingest something and not get the potential benefit. Protein isn't cheap and it would bother me to think of wasting it. Plus it is easy for me to say since I actually enjoy my protein shakes so I am not forcing something down each day.
