incisional hernia

Wonder if anyone else has experienced an incisional hernia as a result of the open Roux-en-Y procedure. I had mine done 12/03, and in April of the following year, saw the surgeon's office in follow up for a lump underneath my incision, then about the size of a ping pong ball. Was told it was definitely NOT a hernia (by the physician's assistant, as my surgeon does not see his patients himself for follow up). Had surgery this past September for two hernias, one the size of a large orange. Have thankfully recovered nicely from that laparascopic hernia repair, but am a little upset that this happened. Feel great and am maintaining my weight loss of 131 pounds and would do it all again!

I mainly correspond with people on the DS board, but yes - I've seen a number of people who developed hernias post-op. Some were VERY large - the women looked pregnant. One had ten of them that had to be repaired. It happens, and it can happen with any procedure the involved opening the abdominal muscles. My hernia was actually a result of laproscopic gallbladder surgery back in '95. --BT

Hi Denise Yes I have a hernia, the doctor said maybe a couple of them. I had open Sept. 05 . My surgeon at my first follow - up made a comment about hernia and I looked at him he said the chance was likely because of the surgery being "open" so I figured I would probably get one. At times it looks like I am pregnant .. and does bother me...not hurt but is bothersome. I have an appt to see the ps the end of November , hoping ins will ok a little extra skin removed....If not this "replacement" doctor ( my surgeon moved to another state ) will do it lap.. Congratulations on your weight loss I have gone from 334 ( highest) to 225 (now) so I hope to lose more. And YES, I would do it again in a heartbeat... Sandy

i had hernia repair 2 months ago. the dr. found 3 in there and opened up my original incision part-way and put in mesh. the surgery wasn't bad but my recovery was pretty slow. i had quite a bit of fluid in there and still have some now. my dr. knew right away what it was. congratulation on your loss and keep up the good work!
