Has anyone tried a cleanse post op?

Hi everyone: I am am 2.5 years post op and am taking a college course about health and wellness. Our instructor has been talking about the importance of regular cleanses and fasting. Apparently our bodies have about 10 lbs of gunk in them that needs to go. I have read about the Master Cleanse which is definitely not for WLS patients and graduates. Has anyone done a cleanse or can recommend one to do for people like us who have had WLS. I did not want to address the class or the instructor because I do not like to tell people that I had WLS when I am in a classroom full of people that may think this is the easy way out. One student does know because he told me he is having WLS and I offered him advice on how to be successful. Other than him no one else even knows. What are your thoughts or ideas? Lori 258/145/130

I have not, but if I were, what I would probably do would be a colonic (washing the colon out from the bottom, rather than via something taken orally). --BT

I've been cleared through my surgeon's office to do the magnesium citrate every once in awhile...every few months. that's the stuff they use for bowel prep on a colonoscopy. i did it once when i just was feeling yuck and man did that clean me out. it took about 6 hours for it to work but i was in the bathroom the rest of the night. might want to ask your surgeon if you can do that.

I have to question the validity of the whole "ten pounds of gunk" theory. If your liver, kidneys, and colon are functioning properly, there should be nothing lurking in your body. Maybe some of the nurses on this board can sing out. You could also ask your PCP or WLS surgeon. Just my humble opinion. Connie -147#

Funny you ask... someone posted in our MN state board about colon cleansing and so I thought I would do some research myself. After years of eating junk, your body does build up things in your colon. I even came across some graphic photos of what came out of people when they did an extreme colon cleanse. Just for ****s and giggles I thought I would try a more natural one. I am taking an herbal colon cleanse. 4 capsules, 2 times a day... all natural herbs to clean you out. They recommend to do it for a couple weeks... I know some colon cleansing pills/powders recommend to do it for a month up to three months. Not that I did it to lose weight - but I have dropped a few pounds.

I also would like to take some kind of cleansing product. I am going to reseach this and I want something on the gentle side even if I have to take it longer.

You can safely have a colon cleansing, just not a master cleanse. I had one at Edgar Cayce about 6 months ago when I was feeliing pretty bad and tired all the time. I felt better after and did loose about 6 pounds that week. It's not something I reccommend for the shy though. I now take a natural colon cleansing product. It keeps me regular but no real weight loss from it. Jane
