Question...Help please
Am 3 years out from surgery and pretty sure I might have reflux. My Dr told me that gastric patients never have that probelm again after surgery... I have heard peopel say on the board that they do.. Is it possible to have heartburn and or reflux after surgery or not and what do they do about it ..
Thanks for any answers you may have ..
Note , havent gained weight or anything , no eating patterns have chnaged at all which might have added to this ..

hey Shirl ... my doc put me on Nexium ... but couldn't give me an answer, because he originally told me that post-ops shouldn't be getting reflux. The Nexium helps, but another doc wants to switch me over to Zantac, because I showed him an article about a study that shows that proton pump inhibitors (i.e. Nexium) can cause gallbladder dysfunction ... which a HIDAscan proved I have ... and in some cases may be reversed by going off the PPIs. SO, I haven't had that prescription filled yet, but if its changing a medication or having the gallbladder out? Well, give me the Zantac.
I still would like to get an answer about the reflux. If it IS acid coming up from our old stomach, wouldn't that mean we'd have a leak of sorts? I dunno.
Dazed and confused,
Karyn
Immediately after surgery my reflux was gone. Now I get periodic pouch pain, not just at the top of the stomach, but the entire pouch. I go back on my Prilosec for a week or so and the pains stop. I have an appointment with my PCP next week, so I'll put that on the table for discussion.
I've tried Zantac before, but it doesn't really work took well for me. Prilosec always take care of me.

I had gerd before surgery took prilosec for a month after surgery never again since I had surgery aug 2003 hope your doc can find out why but I do know being in the medical field some ppl with gallbladder problems do have this as a result of the gallbladder not working properly and alot of ppl with gb end up having the gallbladder removed
