Has anyone battled hypogycemia and won? Can you give me suggestions? I have completely cut sugar out of my diet. I have restricted carbs dramatically, and I am eating and drinking protein on a regular basis. I am still struggling to keep my blood sugar above 65. Any good thoughts for me? Tammy

There is a thread further down dealing with hypoglycemia. It seems to rear it's ugly head at 1 1/2 to 2 years out. I do the best when I eliminate all processed carbs (simple carbs) and focus on protein. If I eat a protein snack at least every 3 hours, I don't get the wild fluctuations in my blood sugar. If you have eliminated all the bad carbs, sugar, white flour, rice, pasta, potatoes, bread, and are still having problems, you should talk with your WL surgeon about it. There are some other things that can cause hypoglycemia other that diet.

I developed hypoglycemia after my WLS. Sorry for the "copy and paste" answer, but, here is my standard response to questions regarding hypoglycemia: About 5% of people who have GBS develop Reactive Hypoglycemia. When we were overweight and, most likely, insulin resistant, our bodies developed an over abundance of the cells in the pancreas (islands of Langerhans) that produce insulin to combat our bodies resistance to it. The reason for this is to flood the blood with insulin, because insulin is how glucose gets into each individual cell. And glucose is our body's fuel. Now, when we eat carbohydrates (which metabolizes into glucose really fast), these cells still go into overdrive producing insulin, not realizing that we are consuming a much smaller amount of carbohydrates than before. Therefore, there is too more insulin in our system in ratio to the glucose, hence the low blood sugar. The way to combat this problem is to eat a steady diet of protein every 2-3 hours and DO NOT consume carbohydrates alone. Always eat them with a protein: meat & veggies, peanut butter crackers, meat & potatoes, etc. Your best bet is to limit simple carbs, like white rice, potatoes, white bread, pasta, etc. Instead, when you eat carbs, focus on complex carbs, like whole grains, brown rice, veggies, fruit, etc. I hope this helps. Good luck. XOXOXO, Sharyn

i found out i had hypogycemia 6 mo after surgery , i got pregnant and within the first 3 mo i found out i had to check blood sugar constanly because my sugars would drop to 40. the dietician said to combine protein and carbs for example crackers and peanut butter so your sugars dont drop rapidly the combination lasts longer. it went away when my daughter was 2 mo old and i havent had a problem since.
