Low Blood sugar issues 2 years out...
Yes! Almost 2 years out here and have been dealing with this for approximately six months. I find the best quick fix for me is peanut butter and crackers. I find it management as long as I am aware and prepared. There is always a protein/carb snack in my purse.
Also, of course, check with your doctor(s).
Feel better,
Vanessa
This issue seems to be cropping up more and more among post ops who are 18 months and beyond....
I posted this query to a similar thread a week or so ago....My doctor is now performing this surgery on people who are not overweight because it seems to cure diabetes...
What about those who didn't have diabetes pre-op...me included. Are we the ones suffering from lowered blood sugars? Or is it affecting those who had diabetes before surgery as well? If not, this really needs to be addressed with the new surgeries.
My doctor suggested eating protein more often: six to eight smaller meals a day, and always eat protein with my carbs. I try to keep a protein bar or drink closeby in case I get shakey -- it usually happens in the mid morning or later at in the evening.
It's scary -- my blood sugar has been as low as 40 when I've tested it, and some people pass out at those levels. Sometimes I just get really crabby and I couldn't put my finger on what it was. Thanks to Tek, who told me that low blood sugar can make you super crabby!!! Wow, was he right!

My ex-husband knew if I was cranky...he needed to feed me. LOL!
I had heard that docs outside the US were performing this surgery on non-obese diabetics for the improvements to the diabetes alone. Hadn't heard it was going on in the US. Interesting. I heard the surgery causes hormonal changes in the intestines, I believe, that improve diabetes long before the weight loss is a factor. In both, my husband and my case.... that was indeed correct.
Good luck, Kathy
Hi Joni,
Oh boy, I get to use this as an excuse for being crabby LOL
It sounds like we do have an issue here. Try the tablets they work great!!!
They are called Glucose Tablets and come in oragne and raspberry. I called them sugar pills but they really have low sugar in them but work GREAT! Here is the nut info:
Cals for one tablet 15
Fat 0
Carbs 4
Sugars 4
I don't dump on these as they are very low. As soon as they melt in my mouth I start to feel better. You can get them at any store like WalGreens....
Take care,
Kathy
Hey, Kath!
Seems this crops up alot these days.
I had hypoglycemia earlier in life and then ended up with diabetes. Since WLS, I've only had 2 lows and they were probably 6 months ago. Couldn't find a reason for them either.
Anyway, I do eat every 3 hours and always have protein. When I have carbs (fruit, etc), I always eat protein with it.
Those lovely peanut butter cheese crackers stay in my purse and in my car for the "just in case" moments. Those seem to work the best.
The problem seems to be that our bodies are so used to high carb intakes and have many very sensitive insulin producing cells that it overreacts to carbs. It gives off too much insulin in response to them. Drives sugars down. They are called Isle of Langerhan cells, I believe. I've heard of a few rare cases where it couldn't be controlled with diet and monitoring and they actually had to remove some of the cells from the pancreas. But that is the extreme.

Hey Kathy ... you know pretty much what's been going on with me ... but about one month ago, I had a grand mal seizure at the Renaissance Faire (10:30am). The rescue squad tested my blood glucose level at 23. They were able to get it up to 177 in the ambulance, but it had tanked to the low 50s by the time we got to the hospital.
I did have a glucose tolerance test last Monday (NOT fun). My doc gave me some of the results, the first draw (one hour after the "delish beverage" ) had my blood sugar level at 38, and didn't go up much more the second hour. I still would like to find out what my baseline was, etc. He did mention hypoglycemia, and discussed seeing an endocrinologist, but I don't know where we are yet with that quite yet.
It's so strange ... I also have found that anytime I eat (almost ANYTHING), about 15-20 minutes later, I mini-dump (flushed, sweaty, nauseated, cramping, and now something new ... *****ly tingly feelings on my face and neck, like little needles).
It's also believed that I perhaps had a seizure at the end of May in Dallas (I was found on the floor in the bathroom) ... but paramedics just checked my blood pressure and assumed I was intoxicated (which I wasn't), and they didn't check my blood sugar levels, and left me there. I do, however, recall the same feeling prior to passing out in Dallas as I had about 15 minutes prior to my recent seizure.
I get this feeling ... kind of like my arms and legs are floating ... and I've actually been feeling that more and more lately.
Personally, I've heard from others not to do the sugar pills, but a mixture of carbs/protein such as peanut butter crackers are better for us (so we don't end up dumping from the sugar pills).
I'd like to know how everyone else fares and what you're doing.
Thanks!
Karyn
Hey Darlin,
I know you have been to hell and back and still going to visit...
Try the tablets, I don't think you would dump on them. I know it's hard for you to eat. Here is the nut info on them:
They are called Glucose Tablets and come in oragne and raspberry. I called them sugar pills but they really have low sugar in them but work GREAT!

I am so glad I checked in this morning ... I was going to post about this as well . I too suffer from the same low blood sugar . Being pre-surgery I was diagnosed as Type II Diabetic . It cured the high blood sugar symptons , leaving me free to be off my meds but I now have the opposite . I have passed out a couple times and it scares the heck outa me ...
I try to carry my protein bars or crackers .. sometimes just raisins or peanuts work . I am so glad I read this .. as I feared I was alone . And it does seem like it is cropping up with us Grads more and more .
Thanks Ladies for all your input .
